bye bye kitty

My truck is now straight piped. It took me less than an hour to do everything by myself from start to clean up. Only$24 for clamps and the pipe was free from when I took my muffler off. I was just going to cut the cat off with a cut off wheel but though it would be better if i took it ouf from the truck and cut it with a portaband. Sounds great, my friends love it, im happy.

With emission testing in Ca,that part could bring you some spare bucks. Lots of them.

Yup, I am sure there are ALOT of people scrambling for a cat that don't have one. I am glad I kept mine on. I did ditch the muffler, but from what I can tell, muffler is not a requirement for diesel smog, only cat and other smog equipment.

Has it helped with egt reduction at all? I have been thinking about doing this but the egt's would be the only reason for me.

I am thinking guys who run programmers begin to clog the cat which bumps the EGTs and lowers the mileage. When they take it off is when they see the big changes. Seems like when some people see no change and others see like what Flow_Master lost 300F worth of temp.

Seeing I do 95% in town driving I bet mine is getting kinda nasty. I am chomping at the bit trying to decide whether or not to do it myself. Been looking at a resonator for the possible drone. Can anyone comment on how bad the drone gets when you take it off?

i dont live in Cali, so im good for now. I dont have gauges (i know, i know) but the stock temp gauge has been lower. The drone only bothers me (not to bad, music hides it)at 1500rpms which is in town driving. I'm going to put my muffler on sometime this weekend and see if i like it any better.

I've been thinking about this too for a reduction in egt's while towing my heavy 5th wheel. I'm afraid it will drive my family nuts on our trips though.

I don't get the best mileage anyway, and about 90% of my driving is in town. I only work 5 miles away. Wondering if I've cooked my cat and that's been my heat issue.

I am wondering the same thing. I think it would be worth a try. The delete pipes are relatively cheap so it wouldn't be a huge waste of money to give it a try. I know I should probably try something other than my beta 4.4 to lower egt's but I just love this tune and am scared to try a newer version and not like it and then not be able to go back to 4.4

The files at Black Smoke's site have been patched. So you can go back now. I was on 2.4.4 or whatever the newest one from Bully Dog was, and I loaded the Crazy Larry in. It's now at 2.4.1.

I've been wondering what it would be like in terms of EGT's to go back to newest tune from Bully Dog, but I hate to mess around too much. I can't afford a new ECM right now. I just got this toyhauler. LOL

Did the muffler help any? I still haven't done the cat delete. I can't have any drone in the cab...

I did the cat delete and did not notice hardly anything at all. If there was an egt reduction it was so slight it is not noticeable. The drone people talk about was also not noticed on my rig. Overall I would not do it again. I wanted egt reduction and like I said there was none on my truck.

Hmmm...bummer. You're having EGT problems? I would think between the smarty (boost fooling) and the turbo you'd be in good shape.

How do you like your trans setup? How much do you have into it? I have to do something about mine before I blow it up.

Thats a little high to be realistic, when 99% of folks who pull their cat see no noticeable reduction in EGT's, including myself.

The cat in these trucks is very hi-flow, guys have dyno'd 600 with the stock exhaust, and a change in exhaust didn't make a huge difference in power.

The only EGT change i saw is the truck takes a little less time to cool down to 300* for shutdown, otherwise no change.

My egt's are hotter than I would like. I think alot is because of the warm weather now. I can bury 1500 degrees too quick from a dead stop. I can see 1450 when towing up hills in OD. I can be a bit lower if I turn Smarty down, but what fun is that. From my experience the only real way to lower egt's significantly is to have twins. Overall, the stocker does almost as good as the Garrett stage 2 I have now and was better than the 64-65-13 I used to have.
