Welcome,

Use the search feature on the forums they will give you tons of reading on just about anything you need or want to know.

What you are asking is mostly personal preference.

It doesn't matter what brand of truck with what parts they will all have some issues that you have to watch out for.

IMO 12V with a 5 spd, this is the truck that I originally was looking for but settled for a nice 98.5 24V Auto. Don't get me wrong it was a great truck but the 12V has less fuel pump issues and the slush box just didn't agree with me.

Good luck on the search

Personally I despise autos, but if you want a fast truck, you would be better off with one.

I like the simplicity and reliability of the mechanical 12v. And I have owned both, I prefer the 97 in pretty much every way over the 99, except the quad cab.

I spent much time researching various options, and FOR MY PREFERENCE, I wanted a early 98 12V quad cab/ 5 speed. When the truck hit me in the face, it was a 97 Ext cab 12V/Auto. I cant say enough good about this thing, other than I prefer to shift them myself....... Now, to each his owm, I LOVE the rattle of the P7100 pumped truck, and dont mind shutting it off when I go through a drive thru. I dont think the pump issues are nearly as prevalent anymore, so long as the lift pump is up to spec, and the 24V's are much quieter, they just arent for me.

I guess I dont hate the Auto nearly as much as I thought I would either......

If you can find an early 98 12V, jump on it, you get the updated dash, hydroboost brakes, etc..... if not, I would say next best would be a 97, at least you get the hydraboost brake booster.

Read what others say are the pros and cons of the different models, decide what is important to you, and then you can decide

LOL@ Displaced......... I almost DIDN'T buy it, but around here,( Central Illinois) its tough to find a decent 12V with any kind of tranny. I watched Ebay for almost a year and it seemed all the good buys on 5 speed trucks were in Texas. I dont have the time to fly down there, and by the time I would have had it transported up here, it wouldnt have been a good deal at all.

I will say this, if the tranny dumps, I'll probably do a 5 speed swap, assuming my clutch leg hasnt atrophied by then!

Partial to the 12 Valves

I'm kind of partial to the 12 valves. 96's seem to have just come my way. I just found truck no. 2 several weeks ago.
