Shouldn't have to just to get it home immediately after purchase but you'll need to find out what is required to operate it for whatever purpose you have in mind.

You need to be licensed for the trucks weight and have the proper endorsements no matter what. (for air brakes etc)

as long as the truck is registered to you as the owner, you can driv the truck no matter the truck. BUT the most important misconception everyone gets wrong is the truck has to be clearly marked "NOT FOR HIRE" . BUT if you plan to use the truck for hire you are only allowed to drive the truck within 150mi. radius of its home base. over that you must have proper CDL to operate the vehicle. if the truck has signs on it you must run a log book for the DOT, if not you will get ticketed and shut down until a lic. driver with a logbook shows up. But if your bills show mileage where yu can prove your time under 12 hrs you can cheat your way out of it. Ifyou are running it for hot shot , no way you can mark it "NOT FOR HIRE" because of your bills. But if your runnng the truck for yourself/ or the co. you work for where you don't have bills on the load you can mark it , just don't put any co. signs on the truck and be sure to keep proper weight tags on the truck cuz weight doesn't matter , BIG FINES !!!

you cant drive any truck just because you own it, you still have to have the right dl. bout the only thing that is right is the 150 mile statement. follow the above advice and you will be spending $$$ for the tow and tickets. Contact your state DOT and see what they say you need.

I know what I need to do to drive it for my business, but what I'm asking is....on the drive home maybe 11hr drive from the dealer RIGHT after I buy it it'll have a temp tag on it do I need to run the logbook then since I'll be empty & not really hauling for $$ I thought I might be exempt???

Is this a dumb answer?

Why not simply log what time you started, where you were headed (home), what the mileage was, what you were carrying (empty), etc. and keep a log for the 11 hours? Pitch it later if you don't need it, but at least you've got it if you do...

The correct DL is the bigger issue. Are you sure the truck is a full 26K? Many are rated 25,900 specifically to avoid issues like this.

I would buy a logbook at any truck stop, and log your trip, enter every open weight station, to show you don't have anything to hide.
Be sure it is registered up to 26,000, at 26,001 you need a CDL
As he stated above you can always pitch the logbook if you don't need it.

I shoulda mentioned the truck is rated 25,900 & it's 600 mi from home so I'm flying to p/u & thought since I'm empty & not actually hauling f/profit I might not have to run the book & etc,if so I better take a sign w/dot#,& logbook.
thanks for all the responses,I guess I'll log in,take the dot,med card & not worry.
thanks guys

Better to be safe than sorry. A ticket and 10 hours in the penalty box would have sucked.

Hope your ride home with the new truck goes well.

You're just lucky there wasn't another DOT man down the road that wasn't so nice .

You didn't mention whether you were crossing state lines . If you stay within the state you aren't subject to FMCSR but many states also require DOT numbers , medical cards , nd log books over 10,000 lbs. GVWR . I see 1 tons pulling trailers pulled over by the KY DVE all the time . Once a 1 ton hooks to a trailer they are over 10,000 lbs.

As many forums as you belong you it seems you'd know there is no endorsement for air brakes . A driver testing with a vehicle without air brakes will have a restriction on his license .
Endorsements and Restrictions:

Drivers who operate special types of CMVs also need to pass additional tests to obtain any of the following endorsements on their CDL:

* T - Double/Triple Trailers (Knowledge test only)
* P - Passenger (Knowledge and Skills Tests)
* N - Tank Vehicle (Knowledge Test only)
* H - Hazardous Materials (Knowledge Test and TSA Threat Assessment)
* X - Combination of Tank Vehicle and Hazardous Materials
* S - School Bus (Knowledge and Skills Tests)

If a driver either fails the air brake component of the general knowledge test or performs the skills test in a vehicle not equipped with air brakes, the driver is issued an air brake restriction, restricting the driver from operating a CMV equipped with air brakes.
