Buying a 01 or 02 Quad4x4
What kind of power can i get out of one of these trucks auto It will be for my son. But i want it to run STRONG drags as well dynoing. I know power will cost trans, turbos, fuel upgrade, what else am i looking at.

Keep an eye out for the 53 block, could be in some early 01's. They are prone too cracking. Look for an 01.5 or 02 to get the rear disk brakes. The vp44 injection pump can be a weak point. If it is in the budget you might look at getting him an early 3rd gen, but I really like my 2nd gen 24v.

Power? Well thers a guy whos truck is only 20 or less hp away from hitting the 1000 hp mark... but thats deffinitely not your average VP44 powered truck. I'd say 400 or 500 could be had with relative ease.
For the most part everyhting else has been covered. Watch for rust... on the doors in particular, mine are starting to come through the paint. Not a good feeling when you see that...

Basically, there were a small percentage of people who have ended up with a crack in the block in the 53 castings. Search it, and you'll find tons of reading. I used to have a very good website that explains it all in my favorites but can't seem to find it.

If you want to make gobs of power easily, I'd go with a 12v or a 3rd gen. common rail. You can make 600-700hp fairly easily (it'll just cost a lot) with a 24v, but going any higher than that, its gonna be real tough. There are a few exceptions out there however.

600hp with a regular 24V isn't that hard. It's been done multiple times to where it's not that impressive anymore-- but still tons of fun, I bet!
That said, most of the big power guys are 12V or Common rail. The VP44 is just fuel-limited compared to them.
The typical fuel-only limit of a VP44 is generally accepted to be around 700hp with twins and fuel only.

I have been thinking late model and 12V I know what i want just have to find the right deal on the truck. I used to do alot of rebuilds (wrecks) just got tired of people wanting a NEW truck on a REBUILT title I know this off the wall but i would not mind doing a FURD crewcabmwitha 12V likea 95-97 models. What do you guys think about this keep in mind this is for my son.

I have been told the 99 and up are easer? If so i wonder what it is. To swap a 12V in a 01 or Quad-cab what will be the big problem say it had a 24V allready in it just swaped them and?
Thanks for the help my Son loves to see what you guys say,He has Diesel in his blood makes me Proud!
