the bully in bullydog

he guys, have an 06 megacab i bought a few months back. after opening up the intake side i bought a brand new superchips programmer off ebay for a couple hundred bucks. i went to install it and it would not read my truck. called superchips and they said to update the programmer. date of manufacture showed 7-31-09 but i did it anyway. after a failed second time i called superchips back. they read the info the tuner was recieving and stated it appeared the previous owner had a shop install one of bullydogs "try before you buy" programs and it left a footprint in the "skim key" area of the PCM. said the only way to clear this was to have the dealer reflash the PCM to the tune of $90 bucks. emailed bullydog and they gave me some b.s. the first time, havent heard back the second time, but it appears they dont care. is their anyway to get ride of this leftover junk bullydog left in my truck so i can upload the superchips. just to clarify the bullydog tune is long gone, the truck is running on the stock tune. sorry for the long post. any help would be great....

I dont necessarily belive that it is a bullydog "ghost"......call Bully dog and talk to them about it but that supercgips should load in.....Is the superchips saying that "bullydog" is loaded in there? I dont think so and think that superchips is making assumptions...call them back if you need more help PM me

I like that, "bullydog ghost" haunting the truck.

Unfortunately, that is exactly what it is and the only way to get rid of it reprogram the ECU. The BDTD had a nasty habit of leaving remnants of itself even after it expired, chiefly it wrote a Brazilian VIN into the ECU and you were stuck until it was reflashed back to one the programmers recognize.

Ask me how I know this.

This is NOT a knock on the BDTD products, just a comment on what could be considered less than ethical marketing tactics or just plain sloppy programming. You decide.

Our crewtruck Duramax was put back to stock but still has the same power as if it was still loaded with the extreme tune. Kinda makes me think trying a Bully Dog is not a good idea!! We are using it in a Dodge so I know it was put back to stock. Nice to have tons of power in the Duramax though!!

Would the Smarty be able to fix this? It has resurrected dead ECMS before from poor programmers.

Yes, but Marco has to write a special recovery flash to fix it. Thats how I and several others fixed the left over VIN from the Bully Dog.

Nope, Bully Dog or dealer only.

I just went through a fiasco 2 weeks ago when I dyno tested CL/SL aginst Smarty TNT/R and when I went to unload the BD it wiped out the callibration codes for my ABS system.

2 weeks, 4 phone calls, and 2 emails to tech support, still no answer.

Thanks god i found a dealer that could help me out.

no 6 oh no, i side with you, less than ethical marketing tactics or just plain sloppy programming. thinking the latter since i hear this problem has been dealt with on the newer tunes. either way bullydog has not responded and i doubt i will get anything outta them.

wyodsl, i will keep your pm in mind if i cant get anything going with them, thx for the offer and the info!

I would type up an official looking bill from yourself, Itemize time for phone calls, to bdog and s chips, dealer time, travel time, and the cost of the reflash and send it to bully dog. I would also go as far as including the bill in a thread here and a few other sites, and include a link to the threads so bdog can follow up and came clean.

I'm sorry for your troubles man. I wish it could have worked out differently, they have good tunes but their service is lacking. I'm also starting to notice it.

yeah i am dissapointed in their service too. talked to two different techs with bullydog, and they contradicted eachother. after the 2nd tech advised me to try and lie to the dealer i knew their business practices werent the best.

another question, when i loaded the superchips it said it couldnt modify tire size because of no ABS module. like 2007 5.9 above, you think the BD messed up my ABS calibration? cuz i know the truck has ABS.... or at least is supposed to, and one of the reasons i bought the superchips was to correct the speedo, more importantly the odometer. im gunna call the dealer and ask, cuz after the re-flash all that should have been corrected, right?

The BD didn't mess up the ABS stuff, at least it didn't on mine. What may be the problem is SC can't talk to the ABS because it is CANBUS. IIRC, the ABS on the 06+ trucks was harder to set the tire size on and it was buried in a different set of menus than before. Might try SC and see if you need an update or something.
