Broken stock camshaft on 07 Mega?

Just got a call from the dealership that the reason my truck broke down is a broken camshaft.

Has anyone ever heard of this? I've seen wiped lobes on cams before before but a broken camshaft?

I am heading down to the dealership to see what is going on right now. I've been stranded from home since last Friday because of this and now they're saying it'll take 2.5 days to fix and that's if the rest of the engine is OK.

The rest of the saga can be found here:

Check the cam journals real closely to be certain they were not galling in the block. Once they begin galling, the cam can stick enough to cause it to snap.

If you can, post up some pics of the cam.

Hey Don, they didn't have the caps off yet to look at the journals but I did watch them turn it over with the cover off and it broke right after the front cylinder.

It also turns out that the truck was on it's 3rd engine by the time I picked it up at 11k miles. It had a short block at 3500 miles and a longblock at 10k miles. Pretty crazy.

The really bad news is that if it needs a new engine, the mechanics told me it could take 2 weeks.

The Chrysler engineers are going to get back to them on what to do later today... If they decide to just replace the cam and its not under warranty I may get them to throw a Helix or Spartan in there lol.

I have never of this before on a CR engine. I have heard of a cam being worn out on here and it was due to the person not using diesel rated oil.

My cam and journals were still purty at 205,000 miles.
How many miles that engine got on it ? Wonder if they screwed something up when they installed the longblock. Maybe a bearing not lined up right with oiling hole or something.

WOW!! 3rd engine in 11k? WTHs that truck been through? Geez...

Either way, that sucks man. Hopefully they can make a quick repair and get ya on your way. Glad to see they got it in quick; I drove by on my way to work this morning to see if they had gotten it in or not. Good luck man...

The current reman engine lasted only 14k miles! Not sure why this truck has seen so many engines, the transmission is still the factory one and doesn't even slip. Not only that, the truck was literally in brand new condition when I bought it, factory tires were barely wore down and not a scratch anywhere, it was immaculate.

I'm going to finally get the Lorenz 2.25, some 20s on 35s and stacks when I get her back home lol.

You might want to sell that thing and RUN, I've never heard of such luck! I could care less if it's under warranty and nothing out of your pocket, that is one bad deal and your asking for trouble!!! unless you paid 10 Gs for it because it was a lemon.
