Broken ring and dealer says not to fix because it will only last 20-30k then crap out

My truck has been spewing oil out of the crank blow by hose. (about a quart every 400 miles) Dealer says they are 90% sure that it is abroken ring, but if they were to repair it now they would only tear it down and replace the broken ring, piston, and rod bearings.

He says if they did this the chances that the engine will fail is high within the next 20-30K? They want to wait until there is a catastrophic failure , ie, piston breakage, that causes enough engine damage that to get a whole new engine.

Truck is 05 with about 78000 miles on it.

Why would just replacing one set of pistons and rings etc cause the rest of th eengine to fail later? Is he just pulling my leg?

Truck still runs good, rough idle on start up and smokes more, but other than that has deciet power. BUT, oil gets on everything I'm towing.

Is he feeding me BS? Should I wait to see if it fails?

Give me your insight.

Thanks

There doing more then pulling your leg, there blowing smoke up your rearend. Sounds like their waiting for your warranty to run out.

A broken ring could do damage to the cylinder walls so just replacing it without doing the necessary machine work to that cylinder would be stupid. Sounds like they are skirting the real job and blowing smoke.

I'd take it to a cummins shop
I'm pretty sure they warranty the engines until 100,000

They have a contract with Dodge to NOT work on these engines till the warranty expires.

Regardless, sounds like the dealer is waiting for your warranty to expire.

Wow. I mean just wow. I know there are some money grubbing S.O.B.'s in the world, but this dealer takes the cake.

Glad I'm not you .... right about now, my buddy from Louisville and his knees would be having a very personal meeting.

Find another dealer.

What's with these CR engines showing major failures before 200k?

BS, I have worked for a dealer 25 years now and we would replace engine no questions asked. I replaced 3 diesel engines this year alone. Two were under warranty and one insurance job.

As all the others have said you are being snowed!
They just want you to go away until it's on your dime, find another dealer.

Did they actually say that?
Sounds like the dealer just wanted to wait out the warranty - and they may not have a tech capable or comfortable doing an in-frame on the bad cylinder.

Probably just a broken top ring on #5 or #6... since the only issue is excessive blowby, a new ring package & hone on the bad hole is usually fine.

When you unscrew the oil filler cap with the engine running, does it just rattle in place or blow off?

Yes, they actually said that. I'm taking it to another dealer, but they are 1.5 hours away.

I'll have to check the filler cap, but pretty sure it just rattles.
