Broke billet input shaft, need your help deciding...

I broke the billet input shaft and it unfortunately wasted the pump and also had to send suncoast converter back to suncoast for repairs. The input shaft was a sonax? I am putting an opie input shaft in this time. I have a (suncoast) billet torque converter, billet input shaft(opie), billet flex plate(suncoast) and a (suncoast) valve body. What else should i put in the tranny since it is on the bench for repairs?? Your advice is much appreciated.

if you have it on the bench with the overdrive unit, why not pop in a billet output while you have the chance, much easier to do on a bench than under a truck at 100 degrees in the wet grass........ did not see you mention any work on the clutches either. room for an extra clutch in the front and back pack.

I am definitely leaning toward a billet output shaft. As far as clutch pack's, never would have thought of that, I will ask Jeff what he has in it now. Thanks for your input. What about billet drum? Yes?-no?

What about billet intermediate? Since you already will have it that far apart.

well, supposedly the rumor is the stock intermediate is fine. I believe it was Dave @Goerend? He was having problems with billet intermediates either breaking stuff around it or the shaft itself, i can't remember, but i believe that is what i read.?

You have no flex in your "flexplate". Everyone I've heard of breaking a billet input shaft is running a billet flexplate. Go laminate or a thicker steel one.

I believe that Suncoast is laminate. I only have a problem with the solid billet flexplates myself.

nrussell I hope you are running a 4 hole input, I wouldn't worry about the intermediate unless you are 600 hp or towing with big power. It took me about 35 lbs of boost pwr brakeing to break a stock intermediate. If you are planning on racing an output is a hot ticket item if you plan on being competitive.

Would it be smart to keep the output stock as a weak link, but easy to change out.

rockjeep, the output is not that easy, you need to drop the drive shaft, transfer case, cross member, overdrive unit, take overdrive unit to get old pressed out, and new pressed in....... there's better ways to spend the day.

If you are drag racing (I don't know that your are), put as much billet in it as possible. Extra clutches will help keep you from welding them especially when power braking. Billet apply levers, billet accumlator pistons, billet hub and drums, ect... From your description it sounds like you have added some pieces to a stock transmission. It may be time for more...

From my experience, at some level you are better off having the whole transmission gone through. Starting last year I went with Ultimate Transmission in Boise ID, and couldn't be happier. I was there for the whole build, and it's amazing all the little tricks that they apply.

The only fuseable link I like to have is my tires. I want everything to hold up to the amount of hp and traction I have.
