Brighter backup ilghts?

Is it really the same bulb for the backup lights and tail lights? Is there a brighter bulb that could be used for the backup lights? Both bulbs are flat base and both had 2 filaments.

I bought the truck used but with low miles so I wouldn't have expected anybody to monkey with the bulbs.

There are much brighter backup light bulbs to be had, but let me tell you from first hand experience;

The brighter bulbs run much hotter than stock. . . . . . . hold that thought.

The stock socket for the reverse lights has a plastic insulator around the center electrode. The brighter bulbs will melt the crap out of it. (At least in my mess, yours may be different).

If you're gonna run the brighter bulbs, you'd do well to go ahead and find some sockets that have the phenolic insulator. They can handle the extra heat.

I've been using higher wattage backup bulbs for about eight years without problem but they again I'm not in the habit of backing up for miles on end.
They work great for me.
Napa used to sell the higher wattage bulbs but quit due to taillight lense melting, you can still get them from JC Whitney.

I back up alot, espically in the strangest places!(please no jokes). Backing down on some really bad boat ramps, I just added some fog lamps under the rear bumper. I have them connected to the 7 pin trailer hook up, nothing is worse than busting your azz on a slimmy boat ramp at night.

I had a set under the bumper until I crushed it on a rock at night... I Start thinking of a different place to put it...



Well so far they have been mounted on the diff for 2k miles and both bulbs still burn bright, and still clean even after being down a muddy road... 50 MPH with big holes and wash board.

I think the trick is that they are mounted in a rubber tractor bulb base and the filaments are running vertical. So far... So good!

Those ones that MoparMan has will get you get you a work order round my parts. (No rearward facing lights without covers). Guess they think you'll light up someone who's tailgating you? Cool idea though! Bought a set of them for my tractor, have yet to install them.

As long as you dont have a switch to turn them on u should be ok. Must be wired to work with your reverse switch.

On my last truck (powerjoke) I had a set mounted in the rear bumper controlled by a rocker... Great to convince civics not to tailgate me in the dark...
But we don't have vehicle inspections here...
I prefer to have them controlled by a switch so you can switch them on while doing something behind your truck,like hooking up tow straps, messing with gates, i seem to do all sorts of stuff at night where there are no other lights...

Yes, They are wired off the reverse lead with a relay in the taillights... But funny... You can bump the reverse switch in the trans while travelling foreward. Just put you clutch in and put it in the slot like you going to shift into reverse and put a little pressure on the stick and... LIGHTS! Both stock and my aftermarkets come on...

There is a trick... Being the bumper and the hitch are there you can't aim the beams high with the light mounted on the diff... even if you wanted to the bumper block it! At least when I'm in the woods I won't crush them again! This set is behind the sway bar and above the bottom of the axle...

Some think the blubs are going to blow quick from the beating the axle going to give it... And other love the idea...
