Breather Bottle Question?

SO..i got this 02' ..slightly used with 40,000 miles from a used truck dealer. Will the Factory still perform TSB's and recalls on it, even if i'm not the original owner? Such as, the breather bottle, wow what a joke to locate it right there up front > ? what other recalls should i take care of on this thing ?

Re:Breather Bottle Question?

Recalls and TSBs are still good. Give your Dodge dealer the VIN and have him look up and see if all the recalls etc. have been taken care of.

You'll probably have to relocate the breather bottle/hose yourself. No big prob.

Re:Breather Bottle Question?

I dont believe there is a TSB on the breather....get yourself 8-10' of 3/4" heater hose, a plastic 3/4" barbed fitting (union type) and some cable ties, run the extended hose along the framerail.....easy and pretty cheap...

Re:Breather Bottle Question?

It's ONLY on the 02's because apparently driving down steep roads or driveways they splash everywhere on the valve cover. :

The breather bottle and breather kit are somewhat different things. Most guys relocate the bottle to the framerail so that when it fills up it doesnt spray oil all over the engine.

I believe you are referring to this TSB - http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2002/09-002-02.htm

I want to get it done as well.....I would catuion you though, make sure your mechanic knows what they are doing because part of the TSB involves removing the VP44. Some, including me consider this a bit risky if the tech hasnt done this before.

Re:Breather Bottle Question?

Does anyone have a link on where to get this kit? I noticed mine is blowing a bit more oil now that I have the ez installed. Maybe its because I was going up and down hills? I thought I read something about that but I dont know! It would be nice to be able to catch this stuff.....I doubt the drag strips like it!

Re:Breather Bottle Question?

Dude...its not a kit.....read my posts.....you need 8-10' of 3/4 heater hose, a 3/4" union barbed fitting and some cable ties to relocate the blow by bottle. Have you emptied your bottle lately??? maybe yours is just full???

As for the TSB - http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2002/09-002-02.htm

That is something you cant do yourself....

Re:Breather Bottle Question?

Wait, I have a bottle? I looked and mine is just a black hose that looks cut off. It's like dripping from that. I can take a pic tomorrow if that helps. I thought you had to buy like a bottle kit to fix it!

Just do this folks. Run it back to T/Case area or so. This will keep the blowby from coating the front of your engine.

If you do not do any off-roading, such as that described in the TSB, then leave well enough alone. Don't fix it if'n it ain't broken. If the criteria applies, by all means take steps to effect repair.

We've done this procedure, (tappet cover gasket), with the exception of adding the new vent fitting and hose. While it's really just basic mechanics, it's not for everyone, and the dealer doesn't get to touch my truck anymore.

Think about this, and only do it if it really applies to your situation.

Edit - We left our PIA breather bottles off

Re:Breather Bottle Question?

Dude......empty your bottle and install the parts I suggested (basically, you are just lengthening the hose and relocating the bottle)....run the hose along the framerail (drivers side) and use some cable ties to tie the hose in place. This way the bottle will be on the bottom of the truck and will be easier to empty or wont be a big deal if it gets full.

Re:Breather Bottle Question?

Should be behind the fan on the drivers side....you may or may not have it.....Im not sure when they started putting the bottle on....

If you dont have it, there will be just an open hose....you can still extend this hose without the bottle. If this is the case, extending the hose will get rid of some of the oil smell in the cab...
