I don't know if this is the proper place but I'm interested in ya'lls opinion on the break in procedure for the new 6.7. I've almost got the 500 miles done before towing. When ya'll started towing, did you haul the full weight that you were going to be towing? My TH weighs about 10k loaded. The book also calls for staying under 50mph for 500 more miles. Do I need to pull my light weight boat first or jump right in with the TH? Staying under 50 for 500 is gonna be tough too. Anyone else try to follow the book on break in? Sorry for length. Thanks in advance.

break it in how its going to be driven for the rest of its life....right in your manual it says that the cummins engine requires no "break in" period

I have read many times on this site to tow as heavy of a trailer you can. I have never had the opportunity to break in a new motor, so I dont have any personl experience.

My personal experience with motors is make sure they are good and warm and break them in hard. Not bag them, but work them long and hard. The rings need to be seated and if they are not worked, they will not seat and you'll get blowby. From what I've heard these Cummins motors are all pre run, loaded and are 80% broken in at the factory.

You aren't breaking in the Cummins, its the differential. Since you already have 500 miles on it, tow whichever trailer you need to. I don't know just how necessary the low speed is. Good luck.

Other items then the motor to break in.I'd follow manufacturers advise.That drove like you stole it is a nifty saying but not something I'd do to a new piece of machinery.

I hooked up my gooseneck dump trailer the day after I got my 08 it had maybe 50 miles on it and started towing around 10,000 to 15,000lbs
with it daily. It has about 19000 miles on it now and it is running great.

In December of '05, I brought my new truck home and installed my 5th wheel hitch. With less than a thousand miles on the odo, we took off up the interstate with a 10,400 lb high profile 5th wheel. I've changed the gear lube every 15k with Mobil-1 75w-140. Didn't bother changing it at 500 miles. Even with the torqueless Hemi pulling the load, I wish you could hear my differential with 101k miles on it. It sounds like it's grinding marbles in it. I'm afraid to take it on the interstate. I ordered a new R&P with master install kit two weeks ago. If AAM ever sends it, it'll be installed and I'll properly break it in this time. Then, as the wife says, I'll trade it anyhow for my 5th Cummins Ram as soon as Dodge gets the emissions programmed right. Whether it's a new truck or a new R&P, they both have a new R&P that needs proper break in.
