Brake wear

I have owned several Rams at my shop from '94 through '98. We have since switched to Chevy's. One of the main reasons for the switch was every single truck would absolutley devour front brake pads. We averaged about 15,000 miles per set on the six Rams we had. My '02 Duramax which I just traded had 185,000 on the factory pads.

I am looking very hard at a 2006 2500 Ram Quad cab 4x4 with 6000 miles. The front alloy wheels are absolutely covered with brake dust. Other than this, I love this truck.

Is this still a problem with the Rams? What kind of mileage are you guys seeing from your front pads?

Thanks!

I've been impressed so far with my 06.

My 02 1500 goes through fronts every 15k, down to rivets.

My 06 2500 was just checked at 15k, they claimed the pads start at 16/32's and I was down to 13/32's, so 3/32's in 15k.

No towing has taken place yet.

My 03 has original pads front and rear at 45000 but I have an exhaust brake. My work truch is a 04.5 and weighs 12000lb. Get 25000 on rear pads and 45000 on front with a 6 speed which probably helps over an auto.

The '06s seem okay, but whether you tow or not, you should get an exhaust brake on it. It will extend the brake shoe life and it's just plain handy.

I got 30,000 miles per set on my 03. If you do a lot of stop and go then the pads will wear very fast. My rears looked like brand new still after 80,000 miles....

That's interesting, my GMC 98 2500 and 95 1500 went through front pads every 20,000 miles. That is with no towing. My Ram lasts much longer. In fact I had about 145,000 miles on my first change.

My 03 has 69k still with the original pads front and rear, and I tow a heavy RV trailer. I do have a 6spd, maybe thats the difference.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I found another immaculate '06 on Sunday. 14000 miles, DC certified pre-owned, QC 2500 4x4, SLT, Bright Silver, 80,000 powertrain warranty.

I'm pulling the trigger this morning!

That one looks good. Did my deal this morning. $34K. Flawless. Chrome Mopar steps. The 80K mile powertrain sold me. Still a little nervous about the 48RE. My Allison spoiled me.

My 04 has 76K and on original pads. Maybe a little less than 1/2 pads left.

Depends on who and how the driver uses them.

I think the extreme amount of brake dust is normal....At least it is on mine
