brake pads chattering

on my truck i have a severe brake pad rattle, and i know that it is in the pads at least due to when i barely press the brake it immediatly stops making the noise, i have had the issue fixed twice and its never last longer than a month and its back to sounding like the front end of the truck is about to fall off.

and my bosses truck does the exact same thing...my theory and tell me if this even makes sense is that we both have rat pack rol out toolboxes in our trucks they weigh about 300 pounds empty and i think with our tools they total about 6 to 7 hundred pounds guestimating so we are thinking that the constant weight of the tool box is keeping enough weight off the front to cause this issue. but how i have no idea.

i need this fixed bad i drive way to many miles a week to be having issues

All I can suggest is that the stainless steel liners may be missing from the rails that the pads slide on. I would think there must be extra clearance somewhere to allow the pads to rattle. Either that or the rubber slide bushings that the caliper pins ride in are worn out or missing.

If you climb under the truck can you duplicate the noise by grabbing on to a caliper and giving it a shake?

If yours is like my '03, there's a metal spring loaded spacer tin [like torquefan suggested] located at the top and the bottom of the caliper bracket. It holds pressure against the caliper when it isn't being used to slow you down. If the center portion of the three tabs on the lower spring gets bent or breaks off, well... the caliper rattles like hell-o and it's a bear to find. Check those springs next time you have the front wheels off.
