Brake and ABS lights on?

This morning when I started the truck the Brake and ABS lights did not go out. I checked the fuses and brake level and found nothing wrong. Also the Emergency brake did release ok.

I have driven it around and it seems to stop ok. But I have not tried a panic stop which would kick in the ABS. Any ideas on what else to check before going to the dealer Monday? There was no sign of this when I parked it last night.

This is a 99 2WD with auto (79000 miles) and it does not have the 4 wheel ABS system.

Thanks.

Re:Brake and ABS lights on?

ARCC,
I had the same problem ! When you are driving, is the speedometer working right ? My speedometer would register up to about 15 mph and then bounce back down to 0 and then bounce around between 0 and 15 mph no matter how fast I was traveling, anyway, I took it to the dealer and they replaced the speed sensor on top of the rear diff. and cleared the trouble code all to the tune of $185.00. Good luck !

Re:Brake and ABS lights on?

Thanks for the response Chip. No the speedometer reads fine. When I left for work Saturday the lights stayed on all the way. When I started it that night to go home all the indicator lights cut off normally and stayed off all the way home. Sunday morning they were on all the way to work. Sunday night off and normal all the way home. This morning everything was normal when I started it. ???

There has to be something loose or marginal if I can just figure out what it is.

Thanks I will keep looking.

Re:Brake and ABS lights on?

check vacuum pump. Low vac will create error in brake circuit.

Re:Brake and ABS lights on?

I have had the exact same problem for the last week on by '99 2500. Brake and ABS lights stay on and occassionally the speedometer does not move when I start moving from a stop then jumps up after about 20 mph.

arcc, let me know if you nail this problem down.

Thanks

Steve

Re:Brake and ABS lights on?

Steve,
This has been an odd problem for me. After Chip responded I began thinking about the speed sensor but the speedometer was working fine. Also on other threads their problems pointed to the speed sensor. Then Monday everything cleared up and no problems. Wednesday on the way to work the lights came on when the truck was started. Just before geting to work the speedometer started acting like yours, no reading then jumping to 20 mph and reading ok till slowing down below 20 mph.

I checked and found the rear wheel speed sensor was $35 at the dealers parts department. I decided to go ahead and replace it then if that did not fix it I would take it in next week. The sensor is located on top of the rear differential. After I removed the spare tire I had enough room to sit behind the axle on the ground and replace the sensor. Not a hard job, just remove the nut holding the brake lines in place then remove the bolt holding the sensor in place. Pull the old sensor up out of the hole, disconnect the connector and stick the new one in then replace the bolt and nut.

So far everything is working correctly now, no ABS or Brake light and the speedometer is working below 20 mph.

I will watch it for a week and report if everything keeps working correctly.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Thanks Randy. I'll plan on buying a sensor but will wait to hear back from you first. I have plenty to do in the meantime, I just picked up a JRE 4" turbo-back exhaust system to install.

Re:Brake and ABS lights on?

My truck is a 03 and about two months old and all of a sudden my ABS and Brake light came on and will not give any error codes. It has done this several times now. I wonder if I should also replace this sensor or have the shop replace it.

Re:Brake and ABS lights on?

**chuckle** My two lights have been on for about 9 months now. Took it to a repair shop, but their unit couldn't read the Dodge codes. Might just replace that sensor on my '99 3500 before shelling out more bucks on a repair visit.

Re:Brake and ABS lights on?

TomW, that may not be a bad idea. I bought one yesterday but am going to wait a couple more days to see how Randy is making out. It was $39 and change incl tax here in NY.

Re:Brake and ABS lights on?

Well,

Its been about a week and the problem with the lights and speedometer have not returned. Looks like changing the speed sensor fixed the problems. Both the lights go off after startup like they should and the speedometer reads fine from 0 to >>. ;D ;D

Now I just have to wait for the next problem.

Thanks to everyone for pointing me in the right direction.

Re:Brake and ABS lights on?

I put the speed sensor I bought on today. I dropped the spare as suggested and had the old one off and new one on in 5 mins. Both the brake and ABS lights are out.

Re:Brake and ABS lights on?

Ditto: My 99 done the same thing a couple of years ago. I was on a trip to Colorado, it was Friday afternoon, and I didn't have time to wait around over the weekend for the dealer to do it (I had fish to catch). I bought the Speed Sensor for about $30 and changed it out at a campground that night. It was an easy 5 minute job.
