Bought me a Cummins

So i finally got me my rig. 01, 3/4ton cummins, 6sp manuel, 3:55 extended cab long box and 74k on it. not a 53 block.

Ok now on the other side it needs tires and an alignment. Any suggestions, on tires ive always used toyos . I am on and off backrounds and in fields but also alot of pavment driving. So its all around tire, i deal with alot of snow and ice to. Suggestions.

Secound question, fuel pump. I want to minimize the chances of stuff (Ingector pump) going bad. So i would like to install a simple secoundary pump to help lifter pump. Suggestions on which set up to go with. On this one please dont abriviate i am not as well versed in this as most of you and also explain to me how the system works that your suggesting.

If you guys know of a way to coble one together that i could pick up the parts for at say napa that would probably be my prefered method. a buddy was telling me take an electric pump and just splice it in but that sounds to easy especially when i remeber reading something about hard starts with extra pumps.

Anyway comment suggestions ect would be so helpful, im not going to turn it up for awhile founding type issues so will save that for a later date.

Machanically im slightly inclined enough to keep old farm impliments running but im over my head once it gets into workings of engins and trans so keep that in mind for me when you explain stuff. Little other background on me im from eastern oregon, i go to school curtisy of Uncle Sam more specifically the Amry-i get commisioned in a little over a year. besides that there aint much. Oh yeah i cant spell if you cant tell....sorry.

First off you want to get a good set of gauges, especially a fuel pressure gauge. Be sure to get a mechanical one. You should have between 14 psi and 16 psi at idle, and you never want to go 5 psi or under. As far a helping the fuel system you can buy a nice 1/2 inch line, lift pump relocation kit from genos garage, this is a very nice kit and includes everything to mount your pump down by the tank and it also eliminate all of the restrictive banjo fittings in the fuel system. With this kit I have 17 psi idle 13 under load and 12 at wide open throttle. As far as tires go if you like toyos they make a real nice mud tire that I have been looking at. A buddy of mine has them and they have good on and off road traction and they are not all that noisey on the pavement. Other people will chime in soon with their ideas as well. +1 on the Toyos. I really like the Open Country M/Ts on my truck. I also prefer the firmer, more stable manners of a proper Load Range E, 10 Ply Rated tire than the softer, squirmier feel of the Load Range D, 8 Ply Rated tires that a lot of people use.

Thanks, i kenw i was going with E range tires, i was thinking Toyo AT because im on road alot too.

I was BSing with a neighbor and he was telling me that diesels need a little bit of backpreasure so the turbo slows down when your not on the accelerator is that true. I was of the opinion that the less backpresure the better.

Well, if you want a tire that last forever and is great on the road and off Ive been extremly happy with the Michelin XC-LT4. Yeah its the factory tire, but I have 40k on mine and they hardly look worn. Never had anything happen, flats or blowouts. Goes great down the highway, which is where mine see the most.

Im running 265-75-16. Im looking to go to 315's if these ever wear out. They always did good in snow, ice, dirt, etc. too.
Just my .02 on the tires.

Congrats on the truck! I want to see some pictures. And being a newbee myself, I don't feel I should give advice, aside from my ongoing doubts on whether I should get a mech or electric FP gauge, and if electric, the cost of Quadzilla commander is not much more than two-three standalone gauges...
For tires, I run GoodYear Wranglers 305-70x16, and although I'd not recommend going with 4-ply like I have (I am a little nervous about them but will see if I can wear them out before replacing), I think they look good and I don't have any traction complains.
I think I will go to a Walbro fuel system after I see FP go low. I searched this site a lot and see that helper pump setups end up costing like $250, provided you put in bigger lines and have a spare campaign pump. Well, saving less than $150, and another spare campaign later - you saved literally nothing and you will be in and out into that LP several times. I think Walbro is the way but I am waiting for my important half to get over the truck purchase first before she sees another $400 spent on it

the BFG AT's are available in E load in a 285. don't know how they compare to the Toyos, but they're a good tire and considerably less expensive

you are correct, less backpressure the better!!! you'll see some people say that 5" exhaust causes slower spooling because there's not enough back pressure... it's the opposite, the gases aren't moving fast enough and they stall in the pipe and cause backpressure

I dont think it matters because who ever had it last straight piped it i think, im putting it up on a lift on monday to service and check everything out, and its louder then i want the exhust to be so ill eventually change it out funds allowing. Probably some 4in system that will quiet it down a liitle but still alow good flow.
