bottom of engine covered in oil
so i noticed this morning that my driveway had a small patch of oil on it and then proceeded to look under the engine.....
right in front of the oil pan the whole bottom side and down to the front axle is coated in oil
i know that alot of times the crankcase breather bottle can puke on the engine but it doesnt seem to messy in that area
my truck has zero mods other than a straight pipe
still seems to run fine as well
any ideas? this has really gottem me worried, specially since im gion outta town this weekend
please help

Since it's all over the axle, too, have you been offroading or on inclines that caused the truck to be put in a position where the front axle puked lube oil. That happens and makes a mess to. With the breather tube, it is usually a steady drip and most of the mess is oil vapor tracking being blown back on the oil pan and axle. Clean it up and it you think it's leaking from somewhere, you can usually find the leak with baby powder. Sprinkle it on and watch for the oil streaks to come into the powder.

hmm, never thought of that, although i really havent put my truck in either of those situations for quite awhile, guess its possible though.
the main concentration of the oil is all over the axle and most of the steering components
also it doesnt particulary smell like gear oil

The breather tube for the axle is under the air intake box. Remove that and see if it is your axle breather. Also, certain types of motor oil blow more than others. I changed to Delvac and it blows more than Delo.

Re:bottom of engine covered in oil
My vote would be for the crankcase breather bottle. I have to empty mine every 1000 miles or it starts blowing oil all over the areas you describe. I always expect to find a lot in the bottle but when I take it down, there is hardly anything in it. So I clean it out with brake cleaner and put it back in and wipe off the bottom of the pan. Lo and behold, the mess stays gone for another 1000 miles.

checked the axle breather hose and that aint it........ amartinson, sounds like my truck and yours are doing the same thing :-
marine, i use rotella, do u know if that blows more than others?
also, if it is the crankcase breather bottle, is there anything that can be done to fix this? either by myself or under warranty (actually still have mine so might as well make them pay for it )
thank you all for the replies

You could try your luck with the dealer. Otherwise there are a couple of options to lengthen your breather tube closer to the ground and eliminate the bottle all together. If you do a search of old threads or there may be something in tech facts, you should find what you are looking for. Good Luck.

I don't know if it blows more. Every truck is different. I lengthened my breather tube so it extends 2 inches below the track bar and zip tied it there. It blows down below to where the diff is, but no collection of oil. If you are in an area with deep snow, you have to watch that it does not get plugged.

extendthe line, keep the botle and put a sock on it. Change sock with each oil change and clean the bottle up. I found that idea in the old threads and it works really well. ;D

Thats funny about the vac pump seal. I quized about three local parts houses about aquiring that seal and all of them came up with nothing. I even had the orignal Angus seal and part number out of one of them and still no luck. I have two vac pumps that I have replaced under warranty for this seal leaking. There was no parts return from DC on them so I have them under my bench. I couldn't stand to see a $700.00 part thrown out for a stupid oil seepage prob. I'll have to contact NAPA monday and see what they can do.

Re:bottom of engine covered in oil
Be sure to replace the seal and o-ring. The seal alone did not cure the oil leak on my truck. Fix the pumps you have under your bench and you can probally make some good $ on eBay or something similar. I think DC wants about $1400 for a new vacuum pump.
