Boost Gauges

Could someone explain to me what a boost gauge measures? And if I change my air intake system and maybe open the exaust a little, do I need a boost gauge? I haven't owned a diesel very long, so I'm trying to learn as I go.
Thanks Wayne

A boost gauge will measure the amount of pressure at the intake manifold. This pressure is some amount greater than atmpsheric due to the fact these motors are turbo charged. You engine will build up to 30 or so psi of boost in stock form.

You really don't need a boost gauge on stock or slightly increased hp levels. EGT is more important. For larger fueling boxes, gauge lovers, and a few other reasons, a boost gauge is nice to have. It is just another way to monitor your engine. Ussually max boost is the biggest concern unless you are troubleshooting another problem.
