Blowing Smoke

Hey, My diesel just started blowing smoke from the tail pipe, from a cold start. The engine feels like it's running on 5 cylinders. The smoke and the rough idle goes away after about 5 minutes or 3-4 blocks. Took it to the dealer (it's still under warranty) and they can't find anything wrong. I'm wondering if it's just bad fuel clogging up the injectors. Anyone else experienced this?

Yes I have had the same issues and new injectors fixed it. I would run that tank of fuel down, then fill at a different location that sells a lot of volume and see if anything changes. If it doesn't then go to a different dealer that actually wants to work and have them diagnose it for an / some injector/s leaking down while the engine is off.

Please fill out you signature line so everyone knows what truck you have and any modifications are done to it.

Mine was doing that at times. My advise is try a different place to get diesel. Also whens the last time you replaced your fuel and air filter? If its been awhile do that. If its still giving you trouble try a differnt dealer. I swaped the filters and stations and havent had any issues since.

Thanks for the advice. Fuel and air filters were replaced at 14k It's at 33k now. Are injectors covered under warranty? I'm still within the 3y/36k

Yes, they are covered under the 5 year/100,000 Cummins warranty.

I would say its probably about time to change them again, after you fill up with new fuel and see if that solves your problem of course. I change mine out about twice as often as that but I'm a little **** about maintenance.

I agree try the easy stuff first. I always dread the dealer run around like they are within specs or we cant reproduce the problem....... But yes they should be covered for 5yr/100000k if they are bad.

I refueled over the weekend and after about 100 highway miles, things started to improve. As the old fuel ran down, things did get worse before they got better. I'm convinced it was bad fuel. The truck's in the shop for injectors and fuel filter. I'm not sure if I can comment here on where the bad fuel came from, but will gladly share the info if allowed.

JMHO You are way overdue on your Fuel filter,,,,, I would switch to the baldwin 5 micron for the FACTORY FUEL FILTER CANISTER,,,, soon,,,,,,

I use FPPF and Power Service fuel treatments. FPPF is like HEAT for gassers and removes the water you can get from older fuel stations or just from condensation in your tank. Power Service helps keep the fuel system clean and slightly increase the cetane rating in diesel.

And you're WAY overdue for filter changes.

had the same issue, it was white smoke coming out right at cold start up.. about 20 seconds or so.. then quit. Took it in for warranty check up because of that.. the diesel mechanic there, whom i know personally, said one of my injectors wasn't running at 100%. He also said i spent too much time idling around (gauged by computer print out of time intervals spent at certain RPM ranges) and that i should use some fuel additive and every once in awhile take the truck at a dead stop and gun it, blowing out carbon build up on the injectors. run through all the gears up to around 75mph ish. He replaced filter and gave me some additive, hadn't had a problem since.
