blower fan works w/out key
My dad has a 94 dodge and the blower in the cab will work without the key being turned on. Has anyone had this work like this before. I was wondering if someone has jumped out the key or if theres some kind of relay for something that this runs through that might be stuck on? thanks

I'm not 100% sure on the older dodge trucks but have seen some older cadillacs do this and they had a resister panel, for the different blower motor speeds, this would foul up and then the blower would run all the time. I'm guessing due to the simplicity of the trucks typically, your likely to have some type of resistor board that controls the speed and may be the problem.

I would look into fixing it, if it is cobbled up and not fused it could short and burn the truck.

thanks fellas, ya were gonna look into it a little closer. The switch works fine as far as turning it off and all the speeds, it just is able to run with no key in the ignition.

The cadillacs would run fine to, high, low, etc but would not shut off. Something about the resister was allowing voltage to travel to the motor all the time, key off.

There was a bulletin back then, involving adding a relay to the blower circuit. It won't be in the wiring diagrams, but it may or may not be there, and it may or may not be the problem, if the contacts have welded themselves together. I think the mounting location of choice was under the dash, around the steering column. Look for a relay and wiring that look like they were added to the truck after it was built. One other possible area to look is the ignition switch. Something in there may be causing that particular set of contacts to short together.
If the truck has anything aftermarket added, in the way of a remote starter, that is a good potential candidate too.

The purpose of the update was to increase the amperage available to the blower motor running on high. The original wiring was not up to the task for long run times and could get very hot.

That was a dealer ad on/update TSB which was a wiring pigtail and relay but that circuit to the blower motor would still be switched off by the ignition switch.
