Block question

Hi All,

I have a 98 12valve QC. I have been looking around the block to see if I have the "53" block, but the numbers I find on the block under the power steering pump is a "1119C" in about 7/16" height, and below that a number "5" about 3/4" tall.

there are no numbers around the oil filter. The truck tailgate has the logo "ISB" and the side of the truck does not say 12 valve or 24, just Cummins turbo diesel. It is a 12 valve with the P7100 pump, It appears to have a screw in block heater just aft of the oil filter. (Was this a 24 valve block?) :-

Anybody know what this means? Should I be looking elsewhere?

What do I have?

Re:Block question

The block number on my 24V is on the passenger side near the front just above the oil pan....

Im a bit confused at your description.....are you sure this is a 12V??.....I believe that this engine should be a "B series" Cummins, not a "ISB"....

If you do have a 12V - I dont think you'll have to worry about the 53 block.....think they were only used on the first few years of the 24V's

Re:Block question

I'm quite sure it's a 12 valve, can't miss the pump. I figured the truck was meant to have a ISB in it but got a 12 valve instead? It was a decaled out for it.

Re:Block question

I think you may still need to check on the 53 block. Look at the injectors and lines, if the injector is in the middle of the head you have a 24-valve, if they are on the exhaust side of the head you have a 12-valve.

Re:Block question

You could possibly have a 24-valve with a p-pump conversion. Who owned the truck before you?

Re:Block question

Injectors are on the side. The build date of the engine on the data plate shows 11/97.

Re:Block question

Also, if its a 24V......it will say 24V Cummins Turbo Diesel on the valve cover

I realize the concern about the 53 block (I've got one)....you should be equally concerned about your KDP.....You MUST repair your Killer Dowel Pin (or make sure its already done)....If you're not familar with this problem, check out the links Ive attached:

Re:Block question

The previous owner did not modify any decals, it appears all factory original, I can take som pics and post and see if anyone else has it?

I did the KDP right away after I bought it, pretty easy Job. The pin had not moved.

I've never seen an OEM Dodge with the ISB decal.
That is an emblem available from Cummins.

Re:Block question

12 Valve trucks only say Cummins Turbo Diesel under the Truck size on the side doors and the newer computer scooter will have the 24 valve before it.I have seen a few trucks that were added the ISB signature plates at shows I have been to or at but all have been dealer installed and not done by the factory.Depending on the dealership they have been mounted on hood sides, doors or tailgates, why who knows.Hope this helps you some.......Andy

Re:Block question

There was a fella on the TDR forum with a 98 12 valve "53" block. I guess they were not to picky where they went?

Re:Block question

I have a cousin with an 01' in the shop with a cracked block. Bone stock truck. Crack is on passenger side. he said you can see it thru the fenderwell. Is this related or a fluke? SS
