block heater

I dont think mine came with one (01 2500) At least Im not seeing any cords sticking out from under the bumper. I was wondering if I could buy a kit or if someone has one laying around maybe?? It already gets down to low 20's here at night and I thought it would be good idea to plug it in.

Check just behind the oil filter, there should be a plug. The cord just screws in the side of the block I think. The dodge dealer has them for about $30.

They all come with the heater, but don't come with the cord unless ordered that way. Readily available from Dodge and other sources. About a 5 minute install.

FYI - Cummins ships all engines with block heaters and recommends plugging in under 40*F. Many reasons for this.... don't be cheap.
Makes a big difference, IMO, on internal wear and tear down the road as the miles add up!

Thanks guys! I was looking for one on ebay and all I could find was the cord.

Now it makes more sense that they sell only cords lol. Heater is already installed but needs a cord. Thanks again.

All Dodge trucks made before 2003 came with both the heater and the cord.

Look on the passenger side of the engine, between the turbo and the oil filter for the heater, and then foll the cord and find the plug. It looks like this:

EDIT : That's odd that yours does not have the cord.

The ebay cord sure doesn't look like any Dodge cord end I've ever seen.
I'd spend the extra money and just buy one from the dealer or Cummins, p/n 3923050.

Ive just checked and I do have one. It was well hidden. Ive already plugged it in. Does it have to be plugged it whole time or just before I need to drive it. I hope it doesn't use a lot of energy lol

650 watts. If you know when you need to start it, about 3 hours is good.

I thought they were 750 Watts?

Either way, they don't use much energy. If you want to figure out how much it will cost to run, find out what your utility company charges for a kilowatt/hour.

An example, say they charge $0.12 for a kW/h. The block heater (if 750 Watts), only uses 3/4 (0.75) kW/h. With that it only costs $0.09 per hour to run. If plugged in overnight (say 10 hours) it would cost $0.90 per night. Pretty cheap IMO.

Mines on a timer that turns it on about 3 houors before I leave in the am as suggested. This also keeps the critters from trying to nest under your hood, it gets quite warm!

Hehehehehe! More than once I've wound up with cat soup. Barn cats LOVE to get up on the block of a car, truck or tractor that's plugged in, because it's relatively warm up there when it's really cold outside. Sometimes they get out in time, sometimes they don't. They make a mess when they hit the fan though.

When I built our home I put an outdoor switched receptacle where I park each vehicle with the switch in the kitchen where there is a small desk. As each vehicle arrives home in the evening they get their block heaters plugged into a switched off circuit. I get up about 3 hours before anyone has to leave in the a.m. so the first thing I do is throw the switch on and by the time anyone leaves their vehicle is warmed up and ready to go.

Timers work well and 3 hrs ahead of time seems to be the norm...... but make sure you get a heavy duty timer. Indoor light timers won't cut it.
$.25 a night here...for 3 hours running time!!

My coolant temp, on a 30* day is 125* after 3 hrs.
(A nice added feature of the Quadzilla Adrenaline box... the Pulse Controller can show coolant temp, oil temp and IAT temps).
