it looks like there will be a chance that i will not be able to plug in at work so i was wanting to know what i should do about oil viscocity to compensate for not having a block heater.

There is 5-40 in synthetic form. A 0-40 is also avaliable. Next step is a 10-30 for extreme cold diesel.
In Southern Ohio, use a 5-40 and you will be fine. It is easy to find.

"Southwest Ohio" as in Cincinnati area?
I live just south of the border in Kentucky. I run Rotella 15w40 year round without any problems. It never gets cold enough here to worry about changing back and forth. Might want to give it a minute of two after you start it to get the oil warmed up a little if you can't plug in.

I always just have to change things! I have a 1400 Watt generator that will power the two battery warmers and the block heater, the trouble is that the fuel tank isn't big enough. So the other summer I drilled a hole into the fuel tank of a specific size that will fit an o-ringed fuel fitting with a stainless braided hose 3 ft long? with an drilled and tapped 1/4" piece of steel with a gas compatible gasket to a 20 L container. The one time when it was -30*C it ran for 6 hours and it didn't make much of a dint in the fuel. Where as with the factory tank it was empty in a short time. Where there is a will there is a way, and I will have my way!

Synthetic oil makes a big difference. Definitely cranks faster. If you're gonna be working in the cold with no plug ins, a coolant heater like an Espar/Webasto will be a great thing to have.
