Wait a minute on deciding on what to do. I had a simular problem last year.It appeard that there was an increased precentanged of potassium. Then, it suddenly changed to normal. I have been sending a sample after 4000 miles and change the oil at 7500 miles since. Now after two samples later, no problems. I believe it must have been from the sampling hose. (sorry for any spelling i do not have my normal spelling check on this computer )

My 07 5.9 currently has 26000 miles. Oil samples taken every 5000 and my lowest potassium was 0 and my highest was 7. Most were 5,6's.

Well being a 5.9 you don't have a cooled EGR, so that rules that idea out... I am disappointed they even mentioned it, IMHO they should know more about the engines if they want to make comments like that...

Three oil samples at $30 or so dollars a pop. Way to serious about oil. Run her out to about 10,000 miles and check for significant abnormal material in sample. Believe potassium is a oil additive to start with, not from something in engine, keep er rolling is what sample says to me.

Yes, Rotella I believe uses it as an additive. The way I look at it is $30 is cheaper than 12,000 bucks for a new engine. If you are having a serious problem, it does NOT take long for it to ruin something. For example, Fuel dilution. Or if you have a little fuel dilution at 5,000 it might help you see a problem WAY IN ADVANCE of it becomming to serious when the injector fully fails and fills the crank with diesel. I have no problem spending the 25.00 bucks every few months...
