Black Smoke Help

Ok, I recently been throwing (rolling) black smoke on WOT and cold start ups (puff of black smoke). I do not have a programmer/tuner on for months. I did use one for about a year and took it off. I changed my fuel filter and cleaned my air filter a couple of days ago. Still have it and looks like I have a tuner/programmer on WOT. I have noticed the black smoke for a couple of weeks. I know I have enough air (aftermarket CAI, I/C, Exhuast, Air & Exhuast Manifold) w/ the fuel. My mileage has not changed. I still get 18-19mpg on the highway and 16-17mpg mix driving. Any thoughts? I think it blows too much smoke for stock fueling. I hate to take it to the dealer, but may have to.

you should drive it hard to burn off whatever build up has accumulated! just mash the motor...why no perf accesories?

My truck was the same when I took the SMARTY off. It still smoked pretty good.

I've done that already. I posted because I never noticed that much black smoke before, especially on cold start ups. So I did not know if something was going on. I figured if my mileage drops or get an rough idle then I should be worried.

No performance tuners/programmers for me. Atleast for now. After I complete my suspension system I will look into a mild tuner for a little more getty up for my 35" tires off the line or lower band of power.

I would look into the turbo, that is what it sounds like to me, you could have all those air upgrades but, if the turbo isnt working proper than they wont do a bit of good.

Interesting point, because around when I started seeing the black smoke. I was on vacation heading to Phoenix from Norcal. About half way in stop and go traffic on the I-10. I WOT when the traffic opened up and got a very loud drone to point no conversation could take place in the cab. I knew it was my exhuast. When I got fuel I checked the exhuast and it was sheared in two between the muffler and the turbo. I ran it like that for about 250 miles until I made it to Phoenix. Got it fixed and acouple of diesel mechanics told me conflicting points. One said I could damage the turbo running it like that and another said no problem running it for the 250 miles. Ever since I noticed the black smoke on WOT and cold start puff of black smoke. My boost is still showing what it was before. Any idea how to check if the turbo is failing or not working properly? Sounds no different.

Might have a weak injector, injection pump or the ecm could need a flash. If the ecm is advancing the timing it might be putting fuel into the cylinders early.
