I have a major oil leak coming from very front of motor between the cylinder head to block. have any of you guy heard of this. Look's like a new head gasket or head

with ur setup it sounds like a head gasket to me. how much boost r u running? and where u running it hard when it happend? i think 40-50psi of boost u need ur head 0-ringed? with my setup i have 40psi of boost with the box on 3. i havent gotten the chance to look at it on 5 cause im trying to not crash!

Powerwagon440 I run 40 boost max. I don't recall when it happend. because I did not notice a change in performance. The only thing different I doing was testing a hypertec turner and I had my box on 3x3. and I noticed a change in engine sound under power. like to much timing. But you pay to play I have just never seen is it happend on the front of the motor.

That is the most common spot for a 12V to blow the head gasket.

The 24V usually cracks towards #6.

It might be a cracked Head, but could be just a head gasket.

Check to see if you have alot of blowby,, that would be the headgasket.

If you almost no blow by, then it could be a cracked head.

Either way, that truck is headin' to the shop for head work. Depending on labour, you should be able to get back out of the shop for under $3,000, no matter how much the damage.

Haisleys fire Ring $250
Studs $500
Labour for Removing, and reinstalling head, and associated work, $750.

New head will be around $700/$800 plus any core charges.
I think it's $300 for o-ringing, and $600 for a port, and 3 angle valve job.

Pop an ATS manifold on their while yer at it ($400), along with associated gasket, and depending how many miles and how hard you've used it, might want to rebuild that turbo,, about $450-500.

My thought on the matter.

MCummings, I have never seen on blown/or crack in the front like that on a 24V. but we will find out on monday/tuesday for sure what it is. But I am lucky that I am a light duty diesel meachanic. So it will just be another day at the office

hey trashdawg maybe you should take a picture of your pretty turbo and 3piece manifold and post it on here. that gives you what... like 50 extra horse! Or maybe a picture of me towing your ride up to the shop.

well brother, that is easy to say when your truck is stock and mine makes twice as much power than yours.

If you want to just get by for the time being a head gasket alone is around $100 from Cummins, if I remember right. FYI the head weighs about 170 lbs so be sure to eat your wheaties!

OPIE I will be sure to eat some wheaties. Do you think it would be wise to get new head bolts. I think for the time being I won't test any more hypertech turners. I will just run the comp solo and maybe some stage 5 injectors.

I am too old for Wheaties alone, so the cherry picker comes out. To answer your question on the bolts. If they are stretched more than 5.2 inches (measured from the bottom of the head to the tip) they need to be replaced. On one of the stock Cummin head gaskets I bought came with a bolt go/no go guage to check bolt length. I highly recommend obtaining a service manual (Chapter 9 Engine.) for ref torq sequence/settings ect... Since this will be your first time doing it and all.


With the amount of cylinder pressures your making there is no guarentees of how long a stock gasket will last with or without a hypertech installed. It may of been the straw that broke the camel back, but you already got it loaded down heavy already. As you know it cost's $ to make a 7000+ pound truck go fast and be reliable.

That is how I was running mine. After changing over to twins I went to a 15 thou thicker head gasket.
