How do you compress the spring to get the retaining clips out?

Help!

The retaining clips are held on with a nut. Just put a screwdriver in the "slot" you see in the retainer and unscrew the nut. Make sure you measure the depth of the nut BEFORE you remove it so you can install the new springs at the same depth (tension) for a close starting point. You will feel it "click" as you unscrew it. You can also count the number of clicks for the installation.

I'll be cutting my teeth on that this weekend. Reading all the posts here certainly gives you more confidence before you start...

That might be a little extreme! I'll settle for a beer. (can only find the coffee smilie)
Let us know how it works out. The GSK made a huge difference in my '95.

Need to emphasize part of Sidewinder's advice.
It is a good idea to press on the big retainer and get an idea the spring compression.
When you install the GSK springs, try for the same compression as a starting point.

GO IN THROUGH THE SIDE PORT. I tried once to go through the top and gave up. I have large hands and while my fingers are dexterous it just did not work.
When you pull the fuel lever watch for the small half moon key.

Remove the 3 inner springs and all the shims (if any). Remove BOTH of the stock seats. It is a 2 piece affair.
Install the new seat and 2 springs for 3GSK and 4 spring for 4GSK.
Apply top retainer and screw in the nut until you match the measured stud protrusion and spring compression feels the same as stock.
Repeat on other side.

Sometimes the springs are a click difference between the sides. Just try set them the same as stock for your starting point.
It may take a couple tries to get spring compression set where the throttle is a nice steady rpm increase as you press on the go pedal.
Once the throttle response feels good, then set your idle by the bolt on the pump.

edit
Forgot you have a manual. Very often the stock spring setting is a click or 2 tighter than the best GSK setting.
