BHAF - Whats the benefit?
Okay I'm sick of searching on this. Whats the REAL WORLD benefit of the BHAF?
Lower EGT's? if so how much?
More Boost? if so how much?
Now talking in HP or Torque - How much?

It depends on how modded the truck is. BHAF and associated intake mods merely provide the POTENTIAL to flow more air, if the rest of the system is calling for it. I doubt it make any difference at all on a stock truck.
Maybe hear the turbo better with a drilled box or whatever, but that is probably about all. OTOH, if you're running a better turbo and injectors they could POTENTIALLY flow and use alot more air that would be restricted by the stock intake and filter.
But, just another theory of mine...

Good post, Ace!
The BHAF will breathe better than the stock setup, but, depending on how you shroud it, will draw warmer air from the underhood area as opposed to the cold air pickup the stock box has. I'm torn on air intake solutions for 1st gens...I've got a BHAF but am looking for better ideas.

Yep, that's why I did the "Bigragu CAI" thing. (C)old (A)ir (I)ntake. Inspired by Bigragu, I did the cutting and such and coined the term for posterity, 'er prosperity, or uh, posteriors, or, well, whatever...

The stock air system can easily support 300 hp, on stock truck other than sound you probably wont notice much. Now that being said, any thing you can do to introduce more cold air is a benifit. Only 5 hp is a lot when our trucks only come with 150 or so depending on the year.
Bur as was said if you want a bigger filter do your best to get air from outside.

I now wish I had gone with something like an AFE filter instead of the BHAF. I noticed maybe 50* cooler EGT's and 1 more psi boost from the BHAF. The turbo's also louder.
If I were you, I'd skip the BHAF and go with an AFE or similar filter (wannadiesel has one, maybe he'll chime in with specifics) in an enclosure that will draw cool air. I wish I had.

I've tried several different filters on this truck over the years and have been doing an oil analysis every 3K miles to check silicone levels (that is dirt let in by the air filter for the newbies) to see how well they filter. Just for info's sake, here are my results.
The location specific silicone average, meaning what they see on average from all of the samples done from different people living in my area and is considered "normal", is 7 parts per million (PPM) silicon:
Stock Filter: Averaged 6 ppm
AFE Standard Media Filter: Averaged 15 ppm
AFE PG7 Media Filter: Averaged 10 ppm
Uni Foam Filter: Averaged 10 ppm
BHAF: Averaged 4 ppm
It looks like the stock filter is a decent filter. Not surprising I guess. What is surprising is how much better the BHAF did over the rest. I used a Donaldson G110119 BHAF and it just plain ROCKED!
The AFE standard media filter was terrible, to the point of "dusting" the motor in less than 3,000 miles. Avoid that one at all costs.
The AFE PG7 media filter and the Uni Foam filter did about the same as far as filtration. Although not bad, neither had stellar performance and neither would lend itself to extended oil drain intervals. With these samples taken at just 3,000 miles, expect the numbers to go up at least a couple ppm at 5,000 miles. Also, the Uni filter was half the size and didn’t flow nearly as much air as the AFE. I suspect that if Uni had a better selection of cone filters (I used the biggest one they make) and they had one that flowed adequately for me (could support my twins), I wouldn’t have put nearly the suction stress on it and it may have done quite a bit better. Just guessing there.
All of these filters, except the stock filter, was used with either an AFE or an Outerwears pre-filter.
If your going aftermarket and good air filtration is your biggest concern, or if your looking for extended oil drain intervals, a BHAF is definitely the way to go. I just found it interesting when comparing the numbers this morning and thought I would share it.

My local diesel shop said running the outerwear is more restrictive then the stock pot box... I use an AFE (paid under 50 for it) and cut my box a bit, bam! I was getting better boost, faster and more predictable. Then I went with a strait pipe on the stock exhaust system and I use Schaffers diesel fuel winter additive and I'm running 6 miles per gallon better!!

Yesterday I installed a BHAF, NAPA 2790 (lable on filter said Donaldson). Located the filter down in the fender well under the head light. Fabbed a 4" intake to the turbo and necked down to 3". Will be fabbing shroud/sheild this afternoon.
Took the truck for a 200 mile trip today to pick up my new timbren overloads and observed the following:
EGT post turbo, up a long steep grade normally 800# now 750#.
max boost normally 18# now 22#
I felt the power was increased.
turbo spooling was notically faster and smoother.
the thing I liked best, the GROWL of the turbo on accelaration.
The wife said "how come the truck is noisyer today?"
I said "he,he, oh, "it's normal, hang on".
Next, 4" exhaust.
