Hey Everyone,
I bought a BHAF air filter today! The thing is huge! I got for about $30 dollars is all too (I had a parts buddy check on them and they were closer to $50). Anyway, I am going to start working on an "enclosed box, cold-air-intake" setup and I have a quick question. What do you think would be the minimum amount of airspace I would want in between the outside diameter of the filter, and the inside diameter of its housing? I was thinking no less than half an inch, preferably getting closer to an inch if possible but am not sure.

I would just make sure you don't get any awkward rubs or tight spots. Inch or so on the sides will be fine.
Simple rules, get too complex with it and you'll wish you hadn't.

You might consider off-setting the filter some so as to eliminate any restriction of flow to all of the filter media ~

One of our friends in DTR made one out of a 33 quart(I think) "stock pot". He did a real nice job of it too. Do a search for "stock pot air filter housing" and it may turn up.

Lol. Yeah, BC847 that posted above you is the one that did it. He did do a very nice job. I am actually thinking about going to a secondhand store and getting a cheap stock pot. Thank you for all the advice and help though.

For those that have modified boxs that expose the filter element to the "elements" , how many are running a sock or Outerwears type cover over the filter itself?

Seems like opeing things up, especially the front valance, will allow water and stuff into the box? But then how much does the cover restrict vs protect?

I couldn't find a cover big enough to slip over my aFe so I didn't. But then again, I just swiss cheesed the OEM box and haven't opened things up to incoming air & weather/road splash etc.

Just wondering if it matters or not?

I have an Outerwears filter over my BHAF, and a big zip time around it holding it to the fender. It is basically floating there, because I did not want it rubbing anywhere and possible putting a hole in either filter. I need to make some sort of drip shield. When it rains, the water runs in the channel between the fender and hood, and catches the end of the filter that is exposed (Not stuck up inside the fender), thus getting is wet. I have played with the Outerwears and it seems to be pretty water resistent, but a cheap piece of plastic or thin sheet metal and a couple of screws would sure help divert the water.

I have wanted to build some sort of cold air box, but so far have not had the time, and this setup seems to work fine. There is alot of talk of getting cooler air to the engine, but even on a Hot day in Texas the BHAF is better than stock, so I still consider it an upgrade the way I have it. Building the box/pot to mount it in will only sweeten the deal.

If you have a big-legged gal, swipe a pair of her panty-hose, not to wear, but to slip a leg over your air-filter.

For double protection, slip both legs over.

The panty-hose will catch all the bugs, wasps, small birds, and such, lengthening the life of the air-filter.
