I just came back from michael tires and got a price on the BFG 315/70/R17 and 285/70/R17. They wanted $296.95 per tire for the 315's and about 40-50$ cheaper for the 285's (i forget the exact amount) is this a good price for these tires or could i find them cheaper? BTW they come with lifetime balance, rotation, roadside assistance and all that other crap. Also how far will the 315's stick out and will the 285's stick out? also will either of them rub on a stock lift? thanks for the help

thats way to expensive for those treads. you should be able to find a 315 for around $200 a tire,.......Easy. the 285 probably arond $170 a tire, shop somewhere else and youll find better prices

When I bought mine at Sams club Nov of '03 they were $115 per tire now they are $206. I checked the local Discount Tire store and they are $173

As for the fit, the 285's will look nice and fit with ease. They won't stick out much more than the 265's; 1/4" maybe.

The 315's look awesome, but are pretty big. They will stick out about 1" more than the stock 265's. They will fit without any mods on some trucks, but others seem to require a 2" leveling kit up front for some reason.

One thing to consider is how much you pull. Looks like you pull quite a bit of weight, so the 285's would be better than the 315's for pulling 14K as the bigger the tire, the lower they drive your gear ratio, so you would loose some low end grunt and hill climbing power, but it would not be nearly as drastic as it would if you had a gasser. Personally, pulling 14K, I'd go for the 285s since you have 3.73 gears. If I was only pulling maybe 7K, I get the size I wanted regardless. If I had 4.10's I'd get the 315's no question. It's really a personal preference. You need to determine if you prefer looks vs. power. The 315's will drive your mpg down a bit too.

Oh yeah, those tire prices are sky high!

thanks everyone for the help. i think i deffinately will go with the 285's i dont want much at all to stick out. will my speedo have to be recalibrated for the 285's? also do these tires have much road noise?

With 285's the speedo will be off a bit, but not too drastic. It is livable, but if you want it as accurate as possible, have your dealer reset the computer for 33" tires.

I've had 2 sets of BFG TA KO's & they are great tires. They are quite on the highway and provide excellent traction in all road conditions. They are fairly soft, so don't expect to get more than 35-40K out of them.

i just got some h2 wheels off ebay, brand new take offs for $800 they have 315/70 bfg tires, still had the knobies on them, i think it was a good deal, I picked them up localy so no shipping. it took me all afternoon to get the wheels machined out, which i did myself. It looks alot better now. I could not feel a difference in power. my overhead today said 22.7 which is normal, so according to that im getting the same mpg but i dont think that its right. I have a 6 speed and even with the new tires, 1st gear was still useless. but i like them alot, now i dont have so shift so often, i can stay in 5th alot when normaly i would be in 6th, like at 45mph... i have not towed my trailer yet with them, but i want to get a spare tire before i do.

Get the LT295/70/R17 Nitto Terra Grapplers. They fit perfect and they look perfect. I'll see how they wear but so far I'm very impressed. More companies should make this size. It's like the three bears 315 is to big, 285 is to small, 295 is just right.

Are you going stock rim size, if so stick with 285's 315's are too wide for 7.5 " steel wheel (if that is what you have) and will wear uneven. I would recomend a 2" spacer up front to level the truck but they may not rub if left stock depending on the amount of off roading you do. ( 315's probally will) My friend has 315's on stock aluminum wheel (he says 8" wide, but who knows) and they do pooch out a little although he has fender flares that cover them up.

I have 315s now (because they where cheaper than the 285s when I bought them) but I will be replacing them with the 285's when they wear out. The 315's rub very slightly on hard turns and they hurt my gearing. I don't pull much, but I go though a lot of hills. Unloaded the truck is much faster, but who cares about that, I would rather have the mpg and pulling power.

Sort of the same question here. Have a 2004.5 HO 2500HD CTD with 410 gearing. Pulling 8,000 lb travel trailer. I'd not think I'd be making sharp turns pulling a 30 ft travel trailer so I'd think I'd run into tire rub problems. Would you stick with 285 tires or chance it with 305 or 315 series tires ? THANKS !

Pics in my gallery of 285's All stock, no rubbing. I've had 2 sets of BFG's KO's and I found them to wear quick for the first 20K. They seem to wear very well at about 60% tread. Monkeylips right, they are a tad on the soft side, especially when new!
