Best way to kill drone from the Donaldson?

So I recently went to a cheapo 5" TBE exhaust w/ the Donaldson M090535. Needless to say, the drone is unbearable. This weekend my wife and I went up in the mountains scouting for elk and after three hours in the truck, we both had headaches from the drone.

So, has anyone had any luck w/ MBRP's 5" resonator? Any other suggestions? I'd like to stay as cheap as possible and would prefer to put something after the muffler so I can just splice it in (muffler is in just after the downpipe).

And, yes, I have checked all of my hangers and even had a muffler shop add an extra one and realign the rest.

Thanks!

That's weird. I just ditched my MBRP muffler, because of the drone, and replaced it with the exact same Donaldson and I have ZERO drone. I absolutely love the sound from the Donaldson, throaty, but clean. Make sure you don't have a lot of movement in your exhaust system. My guy added a couple of hangers, using the rubber mounts, and my system is rock solid, no movement.

Never heard of that either but he makes it sound like he was expecting to have drone, "needless to say".

Maybe it's the 5" pipe?

It aint the 5" pipe. I have the same thing in a Flo-Pro with the same muffler. I installed this muffler to get rid of the drone I had with the Flo-Pro. Sure it's installed the right way? It should have an arrow showing direction of flow.

The arrow points to the inlet side, not direction of flow.

Well, I read a bunch of posts prior to purchasing and there are quite a few people out there that have a drone w/ the Donaldson. I just thought I'd hopefully not be one of these folks.

Everything is very tight and solid. Not close too any body mounts, frame, etc.

And yeah, the arrow is a little confusing. I installed it w/ the arrow pointing towards the inlet/front of the truck.

I just installed an additional muffler to get rid of my drone even though it wasn't really that bad with just the stock muffler from a 6.7l truck. That 24" BullyDog muffler got rid of the drone 100%. The trick is to put the additional muffler or resonator as close to the downpipe as possible.....

Depending on where you mounted the muffler, I've seen threads here where folks attached/welded pieces of angle on the long axis of the pipe ahead of the muffler. If you have a few large radiator clamps and a 2X2 you could clamp it in place as an experiment. If the drone goes away, pick up a little light angle and weld it in place permanently.

Funny, I used a Donaldson to fix my drone from my Flo Pro race muffler on my 5" system. Never heard of anyone experiencing drone with a Donaldson. Where is your outlet at in regards to the bodywork on the truck?

Now I'm concerned. I bought the Donaldson specifically because everyone said it was quiet. I'm headed out to the garage right now to cut off the oem system install it. Guess I'll let you know.

Do you know if the Bully Dog comes in 5"? I couldn't find one online. Also, do you think that it would matter if it were in front of the Donaldson?

Big Dog, let me make a suggestion before you start. Allowing for the pipe you'll insert into the new muffler, make sure what you remove and what you put back are the same. I've noticed on my truck the rubber hangers are pulling toward the front I believe. IMHO, I think some of the folks how have an issue with drone may be changing the length of the overall system. That in it's self won't cause the drone but the load, or strain on the hangers may. Changing the position of the hanger on the new system as compared to the original. I believe that's why some folks see the drone go away when they add the angle to the pipe ahead of the muffler. I talked to one member recently who said when he cut the cat out of his system the remaining pipe pulled toward the rear of the truck more than an inch.

I might give this a shot. We've got some extra angle laying around our jobsite, I believe. Heck, I'll just tack on some angle on all the straight runs to see if it helps.

Staarma - I originally had it angled back and towards the ground, just after the axle but just rerouted it to the stock location. A little better but still plenty of drone.

I wonder if the placement (under the cab vs. under the bed) of the muffler would make a difference?

My Donaldson is mounted just if front of the rear axle, under the bed.

Yeah, mine is mounted immediately after the downpipe, under the cab.

Anyone else w/ drone have theirs under the cab? Or, how about anyone w/o drone have it under the cab?
