Best place to mount your GPS???

This question is for those of you with aftermarket GPS devices.

I have a Garmin NUVI 660 on the way . . . and would like to know where you have mounted your aftermarket devices. In Calif, we're not supposed to mount anything to the windshield. I'm not opposed to that minor violation, but this unit also has bluetooth handsfree phone capability and I'd like it a little closer to me. I also would like to supply it with a dedicated power wire so it can charge all the time when in its dock. My daughter has a 550 and its battery capacity is pretty weak.

I have my iWay 500c sitting on top of the dash directly above the stereo. Still within arms reach for occasional use, but if you're going to be fiddling with it several times a day I'd recommend it be placed a bit closer. But in that location satellite signal strength is good as well as visibility (mine has a 5" screen).

I thought of that. It doesn't block your view there? That would be a pretty good location to run a wire to as well. I could either drill a hole in the dash (not preferred) or come out near the top of the fake aluminum center dash trim. Any other ideas for a route for the wire?

No, it really doesn't block the view. You can probably run the wire up from the back of the dash, near the widshield. That would probably be the most inconspicuous spot without having to drill a hole. Not sure if yours has the ability or not, but if it will accept an external antenna you could mount it lower and closer, out of plain view, and put an antenna on the roof.

I have my Magellan 760 hardwired and mounted on a gooseneck in between the seats. I also have a magnetic roof antenna, works great.[IMG][/IMG]

Looks nice. Because of the bluetooth handsfree, I'd prefer to keep it up higher - for mic sensitivity and for me to better hear the speakers. Plus, having it up on the dash precludes the need for an external antenna (at least my daughter's NUVI doesn't need one).

I like running wire up the back side of the dash. Is there enough of a gap there? Actually, I may pop for a professional install of the wire - to keep it clean.
