Bearing in Overdrive
On the first truck in my sig, I just had the bearing in the overdrive unit replaced at 187,000. The bearing is a large 6 inch bearing.
Has anyone else experienced a similar failure in their overdrive unit?

I just had the overdrive unit rebuilt at 187,000 miles. The bearing was the only item replaced other than gaskets. The clutches all were good inside the unit. Cost me $500.
Prior to rebuild, I could hear the noise from the failing bearing as a high-pitched whine whenever the truck was in overdrive. The mechanic who did the rebuild is somebody I know and trust and builds and sells high-performance torque converters for the Dodge diesel transmissions. He also has a thirty year history in Dodge auto trannys.
There was nothing to do, of course, with the DTT valve body and torque converter.

The bearing has not failed but one time. Sorry for any lack of clarity. My second post was only a furtherance to my first post. The bearing failed ONCE ONLY and I then had the overdrive unit repaired.

I've had lots of these OD's apart and never seen one with a bad rear bearing... That being said, a bearing doesn't always fail due to "normal wear and tear" or "over time". All it takes is one soft spot in one ball or the race and a two day old bearing will begin to come apart. The whining sound is a characteristic of a pitted race. Your bearing likely came from the factory with a minor imperfection that took that many miles to make itself known...

I rebuilt a core transmission and the rear bearing that was toast, which caused metal to get into other parts of the trans. I was not my trans originally so I do not know its history.
