No glow plugs in our Cummins.
Be it 1st gen, 2nd gen, or your 3rd gen.

Intake grid heater instead.

More than likely still good after 6+years.

Can't recall hearing about any going bad on this board.

As far as batteries, pretty much anything with at least the right number of Cold Cranking Amps,
6year warranty is good too, just in case.

Many swear by Optima's, but they are a bit pricey.

No glow plugs to replace (ain't it nice). My family and I have had good luck with diehard batteries from sears.

I just got 2 Ever Starts from WalMart, supposed to be pretty good batteries for the money, not as good as Optimas, but they are half the price.

I've still got the factory one's on mine. 3 years, 64,225 miles, and countless hours of radio on/truck off operation.

I didn't know the factory batteries ever went bad. I'm rolling 140.000 on my 99 with the CB hooked up to run even when the truck is off. These things still crank just as strong as the day I rolled it off the ******* lot. I hope nobody out there is trying to tell me I gotta spend more money.

The 1996 requires a minimum 750CCA battery. Both batteries must be matched, that is of equal size, age, to reduce the possibility of burning up the starter from a lack of adequate cranking amperage.
