Battery Question

I recently bought a 01' 2500 CTD, 175,000 miles
I parked it for a week, a cold snap came through, down to about 40f (I know, that's not cold compared to up north)
When I started it, it cranked slowly but fired okay, next morning, same. I checked the battery, 12.3V before starting ing cold. The glow plugs drew it down to 10.8V before I started it, after it started the alt. did the job fine up to 14.2.

Question: Does the 10.8V draw down, and the slow crank mean the batteries have reached the end of they're lives?

nope, the draw you see is the grid heaters. there like a toaster coils in your intake. this is why you never use starting fluid on a cummins (unless you unplug the grids).

they will crank slower in the cold.

Your batt. should hold a better charge the 12.3 after sitting over night. 40* is not that cold to really strain a batt. Take the battery and have it load tested. It will save you alot of problems when you need it and it wont start.

Good batteries will spin the motor quick in 40 degrees.
I'd say your batteries are bad especially if there original.
