battery drain

I have a 2007 Dodge 2500 5.9 It was running good ,when I turn it off the battery would drain down in 1-2 hours.
charged the batteries and did a load test. Batteries tested good.I tried to restart and all that it would do is cause the engine check light to flash quickly. No clicking , no start, no anything.I dis connected the computer on the engine but batteries continued to drain . The only way that I could stop the drain is disconnect the hot wire to the fuse panel under the hood. Any help. God forbid taking it to a dealer.

The best way to find a draw is undo a negative batter cable, hook a test lamp to the battery post and the other end of the test lamp to the neg cable,,,if the light lights there is a draw,,,then start pulling each fuse till the light goes out then that would be the problem area, just be sure the dome light is not on while your looking for the problem.( no draw means test light wont light up)

Thanks Mr Jerry,my big problem is that nothing is working .starter not working , nothing when I turn the key. I will try what you suggested for the power draw. Thanks

Today I reload tested the batteries they dropped to 11 volts which looks good .disconnected the neg battery cable and clipped my test light to the neg post, connected the test end to the neg cable.I ended up removing all the fuses one by one ,still had a draw .unplugged the computer, nothing, unplugged the alternator , nothing. So I rechecked the batteries after another charge ,(20amps for 30 minutes) . This time the batteries fell the load test, dropped to 8volts in a 10 second load. So off to the battery store tomorrow.Why the batteries would test good one day and the next would not I have not a clue????
But tomorrow will tell.

Dont quote me but I was thinking number 30 fuse is a main power fuse,,,so unplugging all fuses and still a draw,,I would have to think maybe a short in the starter?

Today replaced the batteries.Then reconnected the test light as earlier ,no light, turned the key nothing but the test light came back on . I disconnected the battery wire at the starter ,nothing, light still on. rechecked fuses , pulled #11and test light went dim but did not go out . #11 is for IOD-CCN/radio/under hood light/wcm/sdars/hfm have not a glue to what all this is . I reconnected the neg battery terminal and disconnected the neg terminal on the passenger side battery and hooked the test light to it, the test light became bright again.So here I am no glue ?????????????? ANYBODY

Disconect the Alternator and try the test light.

Did you say after replacing the batteries then hooking back up the test light there was no draw till you turned the key?
If thats the case then it sounds like a relay sticking,,I had one like that and it was a relay for acc towing harnes that was added because it had the factory add on tow harnes.

Mr. Jerry does the starter have a relay?Would you know where the relays might be. Also the starter will not work with the key . I removed the starter an jumped it with battery cables and it worked perfect. could there still be a short in the starter if it spins? what is the solenoid for that is located next to the passenger side battery? Thanks for staying with me.

Im trying to give you a few pointers im not as sharp as some people in here thats for sure, I have an 06 and I belive thats the solenoid is for the grid heaters, i would disconect that to see if the draw goes away,,but that wouldnt stop it from starting.
I would have thought by pulling each fuse and each square fuse one at a time would have told you where the draw is,,,only other thing that isnt fused that i know of is Alternator and starter.
I also dont know why other guys arent giveing you more help,,my 06 has 4000 miles on it so i havent had to learn much about it yet.

Well Mr Jerry I thank you for all your help!!!!!!! I think that when I was testing I may have had some false reading because I had the battery charger on during some of the testing because the draw was so bad . I realized after awhile that the charger kept the test light on. So starting all over again ,when I pulled the starter the light went out . I just am not sure why the starter would work off the truck and not on it . Oh well another day another head ache .I will take the starter apart tomorrow and see if there is a problem

I was doing some reading, im thinking you better order a contact set for your starter and put that in, maybe one contact is hanging up causing the draw and not letting the starter work also,even though it did work off the truck i know,,,,Geno has them for like 25.00 i think.

Ok I will do that.I think you are right about the starter. I will keep you posted and again thanks for everything!!!!!!!!!!! I think that I got bogged down in this process . I should have walked away and cleared my head. All is well now . I believe we just fixed a Dodge.
