Base coat paint

Well the poll looks like a factory two tone...Its been 3 years since I painted my last car.For a full size regular cab dually, how much base paint would I need?(Red)As I remember it's two quarts.Or is that to much? The red will be like the bottom portion of 88 birds truck.

Boy, unless you are going to be using a good HVLP, 2 quarts would scare the bejesus out of me.

I seem to remember you are changing colors, how far are you going with the re-jamb job? ( Hood, inner coil supports, etc?

Also, are you going to line-x the bed, or paint the inside?

I'm with pat, two quarts push it hard, plus most times you can get a gallon for just few more bucks. Dont try skimp, if you run out and need more a buck says wont match perfect.

I will be using a HVLP gun.I will not be painting the inside of the box(getting a spray in liner). And your right about running out.I could get a shade problem.Just need to know, because the red I picked is $115 a quart(RM brand)..

You use less color in base coat than regular paint, two might do it, but its pushing it, plus the color match, and if you ever need to touch up, you have the paint.

it all depends on what brand you are going to use because the mixing ratios are all different some are 1:1 , 2:1 , 1:1.5 like i said it all depends i am in the buisness for an example are shop just painted a 05 jeep liberty compleatly changed the color from white to pink and it took 3 quarts after reducing it it was about 6 or a gallon and a half. but i would say get at least 3 quarts unreduced and you should be ok.

I was thinking to get 2.5 quarts to be safe. That should be safe.I will also be giving the truck about 6 coats clear.....Thats really good for color sanding and depth in color.

THanks 3500 CTD....If I remember RM base is a ratio of 2:1.I'm eving thinking that when I painted the Merc from a dark brown to dark red,i used about 2 quarts...On the dodge, the color will go from the stock red to a very dark red.
