ball joints (how much play is acceptable)

my ball joints are clanking now for 10k. every time i hit a bump they rattle pretty well. so i bring truck in for warranty and they tell me thay are in spec. go figure. i get what seems to be a 1/2" play when i use a tire iron and lift tire. question is if i fail inspection will they then have to warranty them? thanks

You sure it's the ball joints you're hearing? My hood rattles and I have to adjust the cheap plastic stops on the radiator cross member to tighten it up every now and then. I about went nuts trying to figure out what the clunking, popping and creaking was. It sounded just like ball joints. Your joints may have play in them but, check you hood. It may be the source of the noise.

good idea but i know it is the ball joints. i spent days tightening things and lubing this and that. i lifted the truck and used a tire iron and actually replicated the clunking noise.
