BAD front end shimmy

ok, let me describe this as best as I can. the truck has 132K miles. 4x4 ext duallie. I have hit 3 small bumps in the road at around 45 mph and the front end started to shimmy back and forth nearly pulling the wheeel from my hands! I had to stop the truck to make it stop.

any ideas? I just replaced the left hub/bearing and checked the right side so I dont expect it to be that.

what should I expect it to be or where should I look first.

BTW, I had an alignment done about 300 miles ago

I am goin through something similiar. I havea bad track bar...im waiting on Lukes Links to fix it. Meanwhile I put some different tires on the front and it cleared 80% of the wobble up. I had no idea my tires were bad. You couldn't tell by looking at them.

OH for sure forgot tires, right on. I had to keep 2 of my old tires on the rears to help kill vibrations once.

track bar? is that the bar that has the right side tie rod end? wheres a good place to get it? NAPA or elsewhere? cost? is there a way to test this track bar or any of the front end parts to find the exact culprit?? I'm in the early stage of building a house and dont really have the time to pull and replace all the front end parts even though I'm sure they could all use replacement

thanks to all

Yes the track bar has a ball joint on one end and the other connects to the passenger side frame. I checked mine but getting underneath it and having someone turn the steering wheel. The ball joint stud was pulling out of the ball joint bore as the steering wheel was moved. This was also flexing the frame. I have not changed one yet as I am waiting on the Lukes LInks to arrive ( they are caught up in the now storm in Denver). I have read on here that its very easy to change and NAPA sells them for $155.00.

1. track bar and an alignment.

If that doesnt fix it look into the following:

2. steering box / tie rod ends.
3. ball joints
4. hub bearings

track bar has curve in it? I think I see it. I'll check it tomorrow morning.
can the ball joints be checked. I would assume that a really bad ball joint would move a lot when the truck is jacked up.I have tried to check them by jacking it but no luck

thanks

I had problems with my front end just like you and it has been fixed now. Went with all moog from Napa and I replaced my track bar with a moog track bar. It was a little pricey, but it has a lifetime warranty on it so I think it was worth it.
Check out my post here it will answer all your questions

I checked the front yesterday as best as I could. I had a friend turn the wheel from lock to lock applying pressure once bottomed out. The only thing I saw was a little play in the rubber of the track bar on the frame side. It only looked marginal to me but I'm no expert. I'll try to use the pry bar method today and see what I get

thanks guys

happy new year to all

I repaired mine yesterday. I used a Lukes Link to repair the ball joint and a neoprene bushing to replace the old one. The truck drives very good now, in spite of the bad tie rod ends. That will be my next repair.

The way I noticed my track bar was bad was by turning the wheel back and forth with the engine off. I would only turn it until the wheels start to turn and then go back the other way. I could feel it in the wheel. then had some one watch underneth to confirm. I used the moog bar from oreillys. Been riding good ever since.

I had that problem with mine. Replaced the track bar with one from Thuren Fabrication and it solved the problem.
