With gas prices on the rise, and no ceiling in site, I'm curious to see how bad does the gas prices have to go before you sell your truck and get a small, high mileage vehicle.
If I couldn't write off my fuel and didn't actually work this work truck, I would not be able to justify the outrageous expense.

Hmm...that is a tough question.
I will not sell my truck. What I will do, and am researching, is purchasing another vehicle to augment it. There are plenty of used TDI VWs that I am thinking of buying. This is a perfect non-snow on-the-ground winter commute vehicle. I will probably use my motorcycle more in the summer. I've wanted this truck for too many years to just give it up. I may not drive it as much, but....
Same here. I already have a economoy type car to use.
Gas prices can't go up much more and stay there, or the economy will collapse.

I'd like to see a response to a similar poll for Hemi owners . Around here diesel is cheaper than gas and if you need a truck a CTD gets better fuel milage than a gasser .

I don't expect to sell it, I just won't drive it....asmuch. But as said before I'm glad it's not a gasser.

Thank's to my Aunt, I am now the PROUD owner of my recently deceased Mom-Moms 1991 Honda Civic DX.
Couldn't have come at a better time, it had been sitting in her driveway since mid June as a daily reminder of her mothers passing.
34-38 MPG is better than any other car or truck I've owned since I began driving.
The Ram must wait out this stupidness, I learned I can put out healthier "stock" smoke when I let it sit around for a week at a time between driving. One other positive thing is that I washed it 8 days ago and it's still nice and pretty.

I agree with P.J. While the '93 civic I just bought wasn't free (I'm assuming yours was, sorry if I am wrong), I feel it was well worth the $1200. Between the cash saved on fuel, and keeping some of the miles off of the CTD, which I plan to keep fpr 8-10 years, that little ricer should have paid for itself in 6-8 months. Now I jsut gotta get some spinners and one of those coffee can exhausts so I can wind that thing up to 5000 rpm and make as much noise as my pickup at an idle. [coffee]

I know one guy that is wrench for a Deere dealership. He has a new 1500 w/a Hemi. He said it only get 9 mpg, EMPTY.
He always asked me how much power I'm making. Just about every time I see him, I've done something different. [laugh] Pretty cool guy. Might have him in a Cummins yet.
Won't be selling this truck. Gets the best mileage of any full-sized truck I have owned. That, and more than twice the power, too. :D

You must park in a garage. Even if mine sits out in the middle of no where, or under a tree, either birds crap on it, or the dang flies do. [tapdshut] Can't win.

$3.00 to $3.50 for me. I have pretty much sold everything that I used to tow with it so now I just use it as a Suburban more or less. Buying a new house and a having a daughter will do that to you. I hate to get rid of it but if fuel prices go over $3.00 a gallon it will be on the next thing smokin.....

Yes, Free.
Sad way to get it, but it has also been a learning experience for my 10 yr. old son. He has seen how appreciative me and my wife have been and it has rubbed off on him. He has asked if HE can have it if it is still awound when he is old enough to drive. Kids can learn A LOT during "crunch" times like this. The kid actaully wrote a "thank you" note on his own, sealed the envelope and asked for a stamp to send it. My aunts were in shock when they got it.
My whole generation is a full of mostly wasteful, generally lazy folks. Maybe some "tough" times are just what the young ones need to have them understand what life is about??
(note: the hard workers of the 1930's,40's,50's & 60's are long gone).
(secondary note: Is anyone feeling more strongly about buying USA made goods while we are watching our fuel consumption)??

I know exactly what you're saying here, just last night I was talking to a buddy of mine who has a real nice 04 1500 hemi Larime, cryin in his beer says he gets max 13mpg, empty if he really babies it. if he has his 23' boat behind it maybe 8-9 [yuk] [yuk] says, "might end up with a diesel yet" I just don't want to be anywhere around when the dealer he bought it from tells him what it's worth on a trade now [verymad] :o [verymad]

diesel is $2.79 here, regular gas is $3.29
at 17mpg, the cummins makes more sense most other vehicles.
and the cost/loss of selling/trading it makes it unreasonable to do so,
esp if gas continues to skyrocket, and diesel has peaked.
i think you are asking the wrong question, here are my points:
-everyone on here is buying BULK ammo
http://www.georgia-arms.com/
-everyone is talking about how to store/hoard fuel
-everyone on here is ex military, or military minded, and protects thier family.
-everyone on here is VERY SELF RELIANT.
so, i think the 4x4 Quad Cab CTD with a 100gal tank in the bed is the ULTIMATE survivalist vehicle.
that's why i won't sell mine, because it could plow thru most of that stuff down there.
i've got enough 3 inch PVC in my garage to take the hood off and run a snorkel up to the roof if my life and my family depended on it.

Nope
Im paranoid of blood, and needles, (yes im a big baby ok, ive heard it enough) But i will gladly sell the male seed (whod want it tho?) before i sell the ram, there are other alternatives, id buy me a 3 cylinder Geo metro before id sell the ram and park the ram if i have to and just turn it on once in a while.. or use it when I need to move the horses, hay and so forth.. Im sure others here will agree with me.. Oh and a rabbit aint outta the question either..

I love my truck! With gas a few pennies less then diesel it doesn't make sense. I get 20-22mpg with it so It doesn't make sense to go get another vehicle yet. I've been trying a test on this tank of fuel to see what kinda milage I can squeaze out. So far I've got 235 miles out of a 1/4 of a tank. ;)

I wont sell my truck because of diesel prices, period. It can sit in the shop and i will buy me a little truck or something till they go down. And i still wouldnt do that until it does get to higher than 4 or 5 dollars a gallon. I get pretty decent mileage, so unless i found something really good on mileage for cheap, it would be hard to make up the cost of buying something else anyways.

Took me almost 4 years to find a GOOD 98 12V QC 4X4 SB - Im going to be buried in this truck
Besides, fuel prices up north always have been a lot higher than what you Southern boys pay. So - Im used to the high prices on fuel.
I am with Doc, I will be buried in my rig with a roll of Copenhagen in my hands, and in my lacers.

The only way this truck will go is if I replace it with another one. All I need is one small move with my trailer and I can pay for fuel for a good while. Plus the company I work for pays for my fuel while I'm working. I pay for my own on weekends or vacations. They may change this soon if the prices keep going up. I also thought about another vehicle but paying $15-$20,000 for a nice commuter car that won't break down just doesn't seem like a good idea. Ya it will save fuel but $20,000 buys a lot of diesel........

Don't feel pitty for me! I'm happy as a puppy with two p 'er uh tails with my Hemi powered Ram. I like them both and can afford either so I'm not inclined to stretch or skew mpg of either to make one or the other look better. I got 17-18.5 city, 19hwy, and 10.5mpg towing our current 5th wheel with our '03 and '01.5 Cummins powered Ram. I'm getting 14~city, 17hwy and 8.5mpg towing the same 5th wheel with our Hemi powered duplicate of the '03. We're not having to cut back on anything to buy gas. My payments are $94 less a month for the duplicate Hemi powered Ram so I'm still ahead on a monthly bases. Even at that, $3.199 that I paid yesterday is about what gas cost back in 1980 when you compare wages then and now to a gallon of gas then and now. It's not that bad. People are making way too much of it. No I'm not rich. I work for an hourly wage as a mechanic. We're just not up to our eyeballs in debt for a huge house and other non essentials. If gas and diesel reaches $4.999 a gallon, just think of how light traffic will be! ;)

Well.... I guess I'm the only one then. I absolutely love my truck but I’m not married to it. If diesel goes up much more I will be selling it. I have already sold just about everything I used to tow so towing is not an issue anymore. I see where a lot of people waited for “just the right truck” but I just picked mine off of the lot and it had exactly what I wanted on it. Once fuel comes back down (which it will eventually) I will pick up another Cummins. It won’t be the Mega C**P but it will probably be a 2003 with a 6 sp. in it. I like the 48 RE but it doesn’t get near the mileage I was getting out of my 03. I know that the Cummins 610 isn’t getting near the mileage that the 555’s or the 12 valves are getting so I will sell mine and try again sometime.
Will probably be putting it in the classifieds sometime soon (unless diesel goes way down) if anyone is interested.

Nothing wrong with that Britt. I'm sure alot of full sized vehicles are going to start showing up on the lots real soon. Have to admire a man who puts his family as a priority over his wheels. It's sad how many don't. Our kids are grown and on their own. I don't love my truck. It just suits my desires right now. If we decide to let the 5th wheel go, I won't need a truck and my next vehicle might very well be a Honda Civic coupe with leather and 5spd. It will also be a novelty. It's not just the cost of fuel. It's the total cost of the vehicle on a monthly bases including fuel, payments, insurance and maintenance that can make or break us. A used gas/diesel guzzler or a new gas/diesel sipper could be very close in total expense per month. Do what you want regardless how folks on interenet forums feel about it...

My "other truck": '95 Ford Ranger 3.0 4x2 5-speed. 25 mpg, and can barely pull an empty 4x8 utility trailer.
CTD: 4x4, auto, '96, and can pull a small house: 22 mpg. For the 3 mpg, I'll keep the Ram. If I could happen to find a VW TDI cheap and get 45-50 mpg, I would buy it as a second vehicle...but I still wouldn't give up my CTD. I won't hold my breath for a cheap TDI right now though.

Im not selling my truck, until I get into some sort of financial hardship that forces me to. I am looking into buying ANOTHER beater honda civic to commute with, because I can't justify spending $100 a week on fuel for the truck, but it will NEVER get sold, until I lose my job, but since I work for my dad, I don't see that happening either :)

EXACTLY.......
mine isnt a pretty truck, it is a work vehicle and while not a POS, it looks like a work truck.
I looked for a long time for a vehicle that would be able to pull a trailer and still get decent mileage, be able to handle moving hay, fencing, manure, and all the other things I want o use it for......

LOL, I think the poll says it all!
I'm not even thinking about selling my truck. There some things that mere Lincolns and Cadillacs (or Toyota's, Honda's...take your pick) just cannot do that my truck does so well. Oh, instead of getting 18 mpg, I should sell it and buy another gasser truck that cannot pull as well, and suck almost twice as much fuel, or more? Been there, done that; NO way. In my neck of the woods, Diesel is much less expensive than Gasoline; and my truck is well on its way to being paid off.
I'm thinking if someone is thinking of selling their truck because of fuel/gas prices, maybe there's no real need for that person to have one. Maybe its time for them to re-evaluate what they need for a vehicle and make some decisions about owning a fuel/gas miser. And there's nothing wrong with that either.

Sorry but my truck will sit in the yard and become a flower planter if I can't afford the fuel to run her. They say the CTD will run on anything from perfume to fry grease, lets hope I don't have to find out first hand. If I have to let her sit at least I have somethin' pretty to look at. Here in WV the flowers all die in the Winter anyway. [duhhh]

Not gonna happen, my truck is also my work truck. I am looking into brewing my own. My buddy has a kit @ home it cost him $3800.00. He claims that with the cost of equipment & materials it is costing him an average of 0.68 per gallon. No brainer [duhhh] My problem is that my fleet trucks are killin me. They are all Cheby and Ferd gassers

Would never sell on account of the cost of fuel.
A few reasons why...
Diesel is 17 cents per liter cheaper [thats 68 cents a gallon cheaper!!!!] then reg gas up here...My wifes car gets about 25 mpg city and 30 highway...but to me its unsafe with the baby on the way, its a 92 so not so reliable and since my truck is a 4x4 and her car is not, we decided to do a few things to make things work with the truck.
I have netted 21 mpg on the highway and get 15-17 city. Maybe a little bio science to supplement the pump diesel will be in order. :)

I have to much time invested in my truck to get rid of it although my wife would like me to.

Higher prices just mean I drive my '90 Honda CRX HF more instead of truck. CRX gets over 40 mpg around town and much higher on the thruway. Its not even a beater, my mechanic says its good for another 100k miles! I much prefer to fill the 10.6 gallon CRX tank than the Cummins 34 gallon tank.
