Bad batch of Rotella Synthetic
I'm posting this link in case anyone is unaware. I seems that the sulfur level is unusually high in some of these batches of oil. It has a very strong smell (even for "Rosmella". I checked my stash and sure enough one of the lot numbers matched. I cracked the seal and the smell is unmistakeable. :P Shell is recommending the oil be replaced.

There is a link about half way down to a similar discussion at the Diesel Stop forum that lists some affected lot numbers.
My oil was purchased this week at a NC Wal-Mart, no telling how long it has been on the shelf.

Just wondering. Have you had a bad experience Rotella synthetic or something? I run Rotella T myself and see no reason for changing.

Probably because it's not a real synthetic oil, a group III hydrocracked petroluem basestock.
It's allowed to be sold as "synthetic" in the U.S. It could not be sold as synthetic in Europe. It's far less expensive to produce than a true synthetic, but end consumer pricing is nearly as much what you'd pay for Amsoil or Mobil Delvac 1.

Re:Bad batch of Rotella Synthetic
$12.98 at Wally World is not even close to what you pay for PAO's like Delvac 1 or Redline. Saw Rotella Synthetic for that price there today.
It's not a bad oil. Better that Group II's. Wouldn't pay $19.98 at Advance Auto for it, though. Be interesting to see what happens to the price & formulation when they bring out the CI version.

Re:Bad batch of Rotella Synthetic
It's debateably NOT better than group II's.
Yes, the reason I think it stinks is due to exactly whats posted above....hydrocracked petroleum nonsense that's overpriced. Wal mart sometimes sells it for $12.88/gal, and sometimes $18. Either way, you can get a full group IV PAO/Ester synthetic in the amsoil 15w40 HDD/Marine for $16/gal....why bother with the rotella?

Re:Bad batch of Rotella Synthetic
I just go by the published specs. And the measured decible decrease at idle when I switched from Delo 400 (a great oil!) to Rotella synthetic (still deciding).
And I should've known better than to comment on "oil religion," Amsoil or otherwise. Apologies.
