Axle u-joint

So I pulled my front drive shaft thinking the joint or CV was going bad, because I have a rotational clanking coming from the front left.

Well the noise is still there but much less noticeable so I am thinking axle u-joint now. The noise is most pronounced on decel going straight. Turning is smooth and almost noise free so it really has me confused, any thoughts?

TIA, Eric

Similar problem, pulled front shaft-noise still there primarily at straight decel to stops. Found driverside ujoint shot and slipping back and forth in caps. Replaced with inexpensive greasable ujoint as all I found "off shelf" were Chinese made regardless of price. Easy job. Good luck.

Mine made noise in 2 wheel drive but stopped making noise when I locked it out into 4wd.I changed both u-joints and problem solved.Driver side was bad.New ones came from O'reilly $48 each lifetime warranty made in the USA with grease fittings.
