axle u-joint question

axle u-joint question
I am going to replace my front hub assemblys on my 97 2500 4x4. I am going to do the u-joints in the axles while I am at it. My question is do I have to pull the entire axle on the axle disconnect side (passengers side) or does only half the axle shaft come out on that side? Do I have to make sure it is in 4wd or 2wd before I start. I have change a lot on old Chevy's but never with th axle disconnect. Also what are the part numbers for the spicer axle joints for the 4500 pound axle? At least I think that is the axle I have. Any easy way to tell? Thanks in advance.

Make sure you put it in 4WD, then remove the CAD unit from the back side of the axle. Slide axle out. Mark the ujoint parts so they go together the same. When replacing axle, pump a half quart or so of gear lube in the vent hole in the CAD plate.
