automatic transmission help
Need some suggestions.. My stock 48re trans is on its last leg.. Im looking to get a new transmission/converter and im not sure which one to go with..bang for the buck... Suggestions; ATS, Suncoast or Other? My intentions with the truck are to try sled pulling, drag racing every once in a while. For the most part the truck is a daily driver and I might pull a car trailer once in a while.
If any one has a suggestion on a good converter( tripple or five stage) and a good transmission please help.. also cost and quility would play a major factor in the combo..Why would you suggest the trans /converter combo? Bang for the buck who's combo should I buy?
Also wondering what can I expect to pay for the R&R in this swap?
Thanks,

From what i have heard, ATS is a good choice. some people say suncoast, but i have heard a few people here have blown them up on more than one occasion. i plan on going with an ats when i find enough pennies.

Yea..Transmissions are expensive..Thats why I have tried to make the stock trans last as long as I can.. But now its very close to its end at 55k miles on it. Its no fun if you cant run the power through it!! My main goal is to find the best trans for the most reasonable cost..

Lotta good transmissions out there. I think the ones at the 'top of the heap' right now are Goerand bros (I've got their parts) and HTS, although DTT, Suncoast, NADP, DunRite have been around for a long timee and have their loyal customers. I checked around and I think Goerand has one of the best prices for a built tranny, and you won't find anybody here that will say anything bad about them. They are a little hard to get ahold of, but they are only a 6 man shop, Dave Goerand is a perfectionist, and could make a lot more money by hiring more people, and possibly subbing out more stuff. That Goerand chooses to keep everything under his control and doesn't seem to care as much about the money as his reputation (that's my read on him) and when you talk to them, they aren't in a hurry, that was a plus.
I finally got ahold of Goerand's by calling early (their time) and they did everything they said they would do, now I have their parts and am waiting to put them in!

Do some more reading here, and maybe some other forums and talk to some builders and you'l form a opinion which will probably be the right one for you.

Goerend is also the only one that offers a lifetime warranty on a TC. I believe he is also the least expensive on labor if you happen to be within driving distance of Northeast Iowa.
John at Floor It diesel is an authorized DTT builder and installer. He was impressed by the way my truck shifted with the Gorerend VB, and thoroughly impressed with the feel of the TC. Take that for what you want.

Full Suncoast, and I'm I think the real key is to find someone close you can depend on, even the best builders can't forsee everything. If you get a tranny on a crate from 1000 miles away, it's going to suck when you need modifications!
