Auto transmission fluid capacity

Well I just had the tranny rebuilt and now its time to fill it back up, but I can't seem to find specs on how much fluid an "empty" tranny should take. Anyone know???

I dropped my valvebody and let it all drain out for a week and it took 12 quarts to fill that up. So I say at least 12 to start.

My Chrysler shop manual claims 17.5-33 pints? Seems like a pretty big range to me. Maybe 33 pints is with the converter empty?

correct, it will take more fluid if the converter is drained.
and that doesnt happen when you just pull the pan off.

It's taken me 17 quarts to fill a bone dry tranny with stock pan.
Don't think it's possible to ever get that much in again unless the trans is rebuilt.

Just dropping the pan it takes 4-6 quarts to refill.
As long as the fluid isn't discolored or burnt smelling it's a perfectly acceptable practice to just replace the 4-6 qts of ATF from a pan drop. The ATF itself is usually fine but the additive package may be getting low. The addition of just a few quarts is enough to replenish the additives.
