Auto Trans question on new to me 2nd gen.

I just bought an '02 4x4 2500 with an automatic. It's a very clean truck and has been stock for all of its 72,000 miles.

The transmission seems to work well, but with one quirk. After its in 3rd gear, at about 38 to 42 mph and at light throttle, it acts like its going to "shift" again - and then drives normally until the torqe converter goes into overdrive. If heaver throttle is applied, the "shift" or momentary slip if you will, happens just before overdrive engages.

Is this something that is normal with the 47re, a mechanical failure, or electronic? The trans fluid is clean and clear.

Mines all stock and has the same thing. Its like a little delay before shifting into OD. Ive been told its normal.

Thanks, I guess the part that had (has) me concerned is the separation between the "slip" and the od engagement given throttle position. I'll keep driving it and see what happens. It pulled an 8000lb plus trailer 500 miles last week, and other than the described behavior, it did well.

The 47re shifts like this:

3rd lock up, unlocks to 3rd, shifts to 4th, then goes to 4th lock up.

You are probably just feeling the TC disengaging to drop down to 3rd, then jumping up to 4th. My built transmission does it under light throttle as well, more noticeable in a built tranny than a stock tranny.

Ok. Thanks for the information guys. That's quite the odd-ball shift sequence (different than the 48re's that I'm used to anyway). I'll keep driving and enjoying my "new" truck.

Just a note, both my stock and goerends 47re will never lock 3rd without OD turned off. This was what I've always understood as normal.

My Tq converter will lock up in 3rd, with OD locked in or locked out! Always has.
But I have driven 12v 2nd Gens that locked and unlocked in OD based on throttle position, but not in 3rd.
Very unpleasant to drive on hwy with any kind of rolling hills .... compared to mine, at least.

Hmm, do you know for a fact they are not locking in 3rd, or perhaps when the tranny shifts into 3rd lock up you are thinking it's just 3rd?

That seems very odd that the transmission will not lock in 3rd when OD is off

You have what I said backwards. It only locks up in 3rd with OD off.

Also, I know it's not locked up as I can watch the temp gauge and see it not cooling off and a slight move in throttle position changes RPM unlike while locked. My Goerends only accelerates to increase RPM. Plus, I have a lockup switch so it's pretty easy to toggle it on to see it.

Everything I've ever read or felt on the 47RE is what I describe. Not saying you are incorrect, but seems weird. I suppose it's possible that it will lockup with OD still on under circumstances that I don't create? Or maybe it's in limp mode and I didnt know it?
