Auto Trans Problems - Likely Cause?
back story: my '01 has 212K on the original trans, that's about twice as long as I figured it would last so I'm not too bummed, just bad timing at the moment for it to let go.
Was hoping for some insight into the possible culprit.
last week I was pulling a 6,000 lb car hauler through some hilly terrain, all 50-55mph. After 40 miles or so of this I was stopped at a light. pulling away there was some shudder, felt like the rear tires broke loose on wet pavement, except it was dry... :-) It made an odd whining sound after I let off. Anyhow, stopped for a spell and it was working fine again. I finished that trip up without incident including the 50 miles back home (though it seemed 'underpowered' getting rolling). It sat for a week and I drove it to work today. 36 miles there was fine, coming home I pulled away from a light and once the tach hit 2K the engine reved up like it was in neutral. It did this regardless of speed or which gear it was in. For a while it was fine as long as I kept it below 2K. Shorty afterwards it was having trouble getting going from a stop as well. Was fine as long as I was easy on the go pedal. Made it about 25 miles on back roads like this. Then a few miles from home it started working pretty much like normal again, except the TC felt really mushy/sloppy (more so than usual :-)).
Pulled the dipstick and the fluid was not dirty and did not smell burnt. No signs of metal on it. The fluid has been in there about 20,000 miles (bands were adjusted at that time too).
thoughts? I'm leaning (hoping) towards the converter.
Thanks!

I think I'd lean that way too. Bummer! I've got 235k on my original and it seems great. But I am always waiting for that shoe to drop! Honestly think I preferred my 5spd.
