Build the auto up and you will be fine. I would go with a Goerends myself. An auto to manual has many complications and if you don't do a very professional job noboby will want to buy it if sold.

39,
I've been wanting to switch my 48RE to a G56 too. It's a bit of work and expensive with lots of bits and pieces. By the time you consider the bell housing, clutch, pedals, tranny mount, driveshaft, the g56 itself and all the other items it gets expensive. Unless you can find someone with a manual truck that wants an auto and is willing to switch the parts.
I'll be the last one to tell you that building your auto is the way to go. A built auto and a stick are definitely not the same thing. For me, towing and mountain driving would be sweet with a stick. No one can tell you what is right for you.
Because of the extra work and expense, I'll probably rebuild my auto. But it's a compromise and I'm not sure I'll go that route.

If you gotta have a stick, go and purchase a truck that came from the factory with a stick after you sell the one you have if you have to have one. A built auto is not a stick but much much better then the factory 48re and it is good except for the sloppy converter.

If you can swing it, I'd recommend the upgrade and get the manual all at once.
