Auto Tranny Shift Way To Early

Hello,

I recently (month or so back) had a thread about my tps. I was trying to get the voltage correct. I modifyed the tps so I could get in the correct voltage range, afterward it seemed to work pretty good. Now I have another problem popping up.

Sometimes, but not always, the truck will do some real weird shifting.

1. It has tryed to take off in second.

2. It has shifted through all of the gears right away twice now. Once, it actually shifted so quick (locked the converter also) it stalled the motor before I could shif it into neutral.

3. Once it would not go into overdrive, I stopped shut it off for 5 seconds, restart it and it was fine.

4. Maybee other things I am forgetting??

Truck is a 96 with about 210,000 on it, a #10 plate (not far from stock position till I upgrade torque converters), 4gsk and 16* timing. The tranny is a jasper with about 25,000 miles on it. Everything works pretty good if I manualy shift it (unless it decides not to lock the converter like it did the one time).

Sorry this post got so long, but if anyone could help me troubleshoot it, I would appreciate it much.

thanks alot

I can try to help but if you don't have any money to invest in the trans you might not like waht I have to say. Well here goes,I have a 95 and had some fourthe gear lockup issues and I did the same thing and fiddled with the Tps andrilled a hole and cleaned it etc then I finaaly decided to just replace the thing because I got tired of messing with it. As far as the other shifting issues I had a similer problem where I would not down shift all the way to first and it would end up starting in secound so I decided to call Dave at Goerand and after talking to him I figured I would take a chance with 150k on it, it was a chance! So I changed the valve body and most of my issues went away! After that I started having convertor issues so that was next along with a bunch of other mods that Dave recamended. So to make a long story short Dave will more than likley tell you to rebuild the whole thing but if you are broke like I am you might be inclined to take a few chances and those chances just might pay off? They did for me....

Thanks,

So, you are thinking that the tps could cause the extremely early shifts??

The valve body is causing it to not downshift to first every time??

Actually the tps only controls the fourth gear OD the valve body does the shifting at least that is what worked for me. I am no trany expert and you would be better off calling Dave at Goerand and ask him what he thinks and he will make some recamendations for you....

Thanks,

As far as you know:

The tps controls fourth gear lockup???
The valve body controls the 1-4 shifts????

Any other ideas, anyone else confirm this??
thanks

Someone has told me that if the tv cable does noy pull up while accelerating, the tranny can think their is no load and upshift??? I will check into it, but it seems weird?

Ended up being a bad connection on my vss ( vehicle speed sensor ) plug. I added some dielectric grease and it seems to have fixed it.
