Auto to NV4500 in a 93
My buddy and me are looking at starting a little project on his 93 that has the stock overdrive auto (46rh??) to a NV4500, how much work and extra parts is this going to take us?

Pedal assebly, bellhousing adaptor, transmission crossmember, clutch and all components (including hydraulic system), shifter, driveshaft shrotening/ lengthening.
I looked into doing this to my 92 back in 2000, after discovering it didnt tow so well. (who'dve guessed a stock TC wont tow 10K like a manual would?). I decided it would be more cost effective to sell it and buy a 5 speed. Do some research, the Getrag isnt any worse or better than the NV4500; they each have their problems. And since the Getrag is stock for the 1st Gen, that is the route I chose.

I looked into this conversiona as well. Not as bad as you may think. 2wd or 4wd. the 4wd takes a few more pieces. Here's some info:

And here:

This includes EVERYTHING except the pedal assembly. The tranny even has the upgraded nut/shaft thingy.

I did this swap albeit from a 727 to a getrag. the only major non bolt up mod I needed to do was shorten the front driveshaft (2x4) and cutout and install the bigger drivetrain tunnel on the floor of the cab. '74-'80 4x4 or 2x4 4spd dodge fullsized trucks as well as the m880 have a bolt in hump which is great for a getrag access port as well.

It sure seems like alot of work for the "just because he has one." reason. What is the problem with auto transmissions? In general. Other than personal preference and better gas mileage.

I'd still like to do an NV-4500 conversion sometime. I guess that it depends on what other projects I pursue when I am actually making money. It looks like alot of work, but it also looks like it is pretty straightforeward. I guess that the justification of spending a few thousand on my old pickup is the real hurdle!
To answer part of "what is the problem with the auto?", it just doesn't work very well at all for towing. Its a real hindrance.
Anyway, good luck with the conversion!

It only cost me under 2000 total and since you have the trans, you'll be less than 1500 total. I used all new parts as well save for pedals and slave/clutch cyl assy.

600, for one complete working trans with 125K and a spare parts trans thrown in with a broken synchro and broken ear off the case. I bought it off a Tdr friend. I feel that it was a very reasonable deal for both of us. I have put over 40,000 miles on it so far and it is as smooth as ever.
