attn vp 44 gurus
is it my imagination or am i living on borowed time,a few weeks ago i got the death code and dead pedal, had the dead pedal almost everyday,i changed settings on the smarty to a non timing software,i also disconected my vaccum line so i could have low range without being in 4x4,trucks been running great all week and the code hasnt showed up and no dead pedal, the vaccum pump doesnt have anything to do with the vp does it?maybe its the timing advance in the smarty or the comp boxes that some vps dont like that causes them to fail,im just happy shes still running.

im happy for you..ive had to replace mine and now i am just trying to keep this one forever!! i was wondering if there is anything to insure that it will last..im plannin on the BD aux lift pump so that it never runs dry but ive heard from my local mechanic that putting a quart of auto transmission fluid in the diesel every 2 or 3 tanks helps to keep the seals fresh is this true?

Auto trans fluid has quite a bit if detergents and also has a lubricating character. So it will help keep your fuel system clean and it will also lube your lift pump/VP44/injectors. A lot of the older guy who drive truck still dump a quart or 2 in every tank when they fill up and have never had problems. (Neither have I and I use it often)

I agree. I wouldn't put tranny fluid in. It's designed not to burn. Not saying it won't, just saying it's not designed to. Run something like Lucas, Power Service, etc. Something designed to be run in a fuel system. Just my .02.
Your VP might be getting weak. The timing actuator thinga ma jiggy might be getting weak so the added timing from the smarty might be to much for it. Would explain why its been running better without it.

I don't think there is any doubt that the VP is probably getting weak. If you had 'the code' and the dead pedals, it's probably a matter of time. I think I relayed this story before but my truck was still driveable and 'lasted' for over a year with a P0216 on the clock and dead pedals the became increasingly more frequent... when the pump gave up it was instantaneous, as in one day the truck drove, the next day it did not.
